“This is an old building, and based on my room it was not adequately maintained for a long time. The current operator has wisely prioritized first the updates that travelers care about most: the building exterior, public spaces, and my room's furnishings were up-to-date and tasteful. Staff are competent, polite, professional, and take pride in their work. The bed and all other room furniture were new and comfortable and the room was thoroughly cleaned. However, the cosmetic work doesn't fix every……

“Only one person at the counter. Breakfast could be better. More options of snack food to purchase at the front desk. Replace the booze withe food!”

“We just spent 4 nights here, and we were thoroughly impressed! We loved the private fishing pond, the quiet location, and the fact the ample firewood was already provided. The cabin was clean, and everything we needed. We were worried that with 13 and 11 yo kids, that they would not like the fact there was no internet, but it didnt bother any of us. In fact, it never mentioned once. We will definitely be back! ”

“My family has stayed at the Chief 4 times. Management is very friendly. Housekeeping above and beyond. Nice family-owned business. If having breakfast provided, skip this place. Plenty of places within walking distance.”

“Though we know a floor with no carpet is easier to clean possibly, it feels dirty constantly because there is no carpet. Maybe have a tile floor by the door and in the bathroom, and then carpet the remainder of the place so our feet are not dirty constantly. It also feels cold in there. The coffee and food area is good but needs more help becuase it was a long wait time. The variety of foods did not satisfy the needs for morning food.”

“First the one thing we didn’t like - there is no elevator and our room was on the second floor. But staff was friendly and check-in and check-out went well. Bed were comfortable, lots of hot water and thick towels for showers. OK breakfast - cereals, bread and toaster, milk, orange juice, coffee, bananas, oranges, cold hard-boiled eggs. Right in the heart of Custer. Easy to walk to stores and restaurants. We’d recommend - but ask for a room on the first floor if stairs are an issue. ”
