See for yourself why Harrisburg’s unearthly sandstone formations, tucked within lush Shawnee National Forest, earn their ethereal name.

Discover views unlike anywhere else in the Midwest at Garden of the Gods. Hike among dramatic cliffs and rock formations with names such as Camel Rock, Anvil Rock, Devil’s Smoke Stack and Table Rock. Garden of the Gods is a very large natural area covering more than 3,300 acres (1,330 hectares) within Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois.

Experience a unique side of Illinois in Garden of the Gods. While much of the state is filled with flat fields, this area features very unusual geologic formations. The cliffs and rocks were created from layers of sediment that were about 4 miles (6 kilometers) thick, which were then selectively eroded over time by wind, rain, freezing and thawing. In fact, the rocks and cliffs in Garden of the Gods are made of sandstone over 300 million years old.

Follow the Observation Trail to discover the past and present of Garden of the Gods. The 0.25-mile (0.4-kilometer) loop trail winds around rock formations. Enjoy stunning panoramic views and read interpretive signs along the way to learn more about the area’s geological history.

Explore the greater Shawnee National Forest, which spans more than 280,000 acres (110,000 hectares) in Southern Illinois. Hike, mountain bike or horseback ride past thick forests, barren prairies and rocky outcroppings. Cool off or fish in a variety of lakes, ponds, waterfalls and streams.

Don’t be surprised if you see Garden of the Gods in your hand when you receive coins as change during shopping transactions. In 2016, the United States Mint produced 300 million quarters featuring an image of a distinctive hoodoo from Garden of the Gods.

Garden of the Gods is open daily throughout the year. Note that Pharaoh Campground, located within the wilderness, has sites available on a first-come-first-served basis. Arrive early if you plan on spending a night camping under the stars.
