Monterey Wine Country, one of the largest winemaking regions in California. It sits nestled between Big Sur’s dramatic coastline, the steep sloping terrain of Carmel Valley and the undulating landscapes of Salinas Valley. Enjoy tasting sessions and fine dining at welcoming wineries. Hang out in pretty seaside towns and explore jaw-dropping shorelines.
Franciscan friars planted the first grapes in the region over 200 years ago. Today there are over 40,000 acres (16,000 hectares) of vineyards cultivated by around 85 winemakers in addition to some 65 tasting rooms. Vintners take advantage of ancient fertile soils and microclimates to grow 32 varietals, including cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, pinot noir and riesling.
Over two dozen bodegas are located along the River Road Wine Trail in the Salinas Valley. Purchase the Roving River Road Wine Tasting Pass for tasting flights at Manzoni Estate Vineyard, Scheid Vineyards and Wrath Wines, among others. Closely grouped tasting rooms in Carmel Valley invite you to take a relaxed wine walking tour. Bernardus Winery, Holman Ranch Vineyards and Joullian Vineyards are worth checking out.
Charming Carmel-by-the-Sea also presents the chance to leave the car behind and enjoy wine flights on foot. Try Galante Vineyards Tasting Room and Silvestri Vineyards. Arrive for May’s Winemakers’ Celebration, when over 100 varietals are on offer at an open-air festival on Dolores Street. The Grapevine Express departs hourly for the town and Carmel Valley from downtown Monterey.
Away from the wineries the region boasts beautiful beaches, outdoor adventures and scenic drives. Cruise along a stunning section of Pacific coastline via the 17 Mile Drive. Kick back on the sandy shores of Asilomar State Beach and Carmel Beach. Spot sea lions, seals, seabirds and grey whales while hiking in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.
Monterey Wine Country is on the doorstep of Monterey and easily accessible with a rented car and by public bus services. Book overnight stays at guesthouses, hotels and motels and be just a few steps from the wineries and tasting rooms.
