Old Quebec showing night scenes, a city and street scenes

Québec City Travel Guide Video

Explore the charming capital city of the Canadian province of Québec, and its surrounding nature, to discover a little piece of France in North America.

Québec’s motto is “je me souviens” (I remember). To the more than half a million residents of Quebec City, this means more than just honoring the lessons learned from the past it also expresses the delight in preserving monuments and traditions while enjoying freedom and showing “joie de vivre” (lust for life). To experience the charm of this historic port city, join the easy-going locals in historic squares, splendid museums, fresh-produce restaurants and cliff-top parks.

Québec City was one of the earliest European colonies on the continent. The settlement on the St. Lawrence River was a fur-trading post, established in 1608 by the Frenchman Samuel de Champlain. Most residents today cherish the French language and Gallic traditions, even though more recent immigrant groups also add their culture to the mix.

Set out to explore Old Québec (Vieux Québec) on foot or by bike. All major historic and family attractions are within easy reach from the Old Port Québec.

Browse the shops and enjoy fresh local produce in the old stone buildings of Petit-Champlain, North America’s oldest commercial district. Admire the ornate Church Notre-Dame-des-Victoires in Place-Royale in Quebec’s Lower Town.

Rue de Petit-Champlain is where you can get access to the cable railway that will transport you to the Upper Town. Enjoy the magnificent views of the river from Dufferin Terrace, a promenade atop the cliffs, or get active in Battlefields Park.

You could spend days in Old Québec, but don’t miss other exciting parts of the city. Saint-Roch, for example, is known for its artists, trendy bars and galleries. It’s also worth making the short trip to Montmorency Falls, which freezes over in winter.

If you are into history, art, gourmet food, shopping and wintersports, you won’t regret a visit to Québec City. Aéroport International Jean-Lesage is just a short drive away from the city and gives access to Canada’s stunning wilderness.

Getting around Québec City

You will want to walk around the historic parts of the city, as these are very beautiful and discovering their secrets naturally is a delight. Get to the rest of the city using public buses, or rent a bike to use the miles of bike paths that weave through the city. Plenty of rental companies throughout the city cater to cyclists. Renting a car is another option, although not necessary within the city. Visit the Ministry of Transportation of Quebec website.Browse Québec City rental cars.

Best time to visit

Perhaps surprisingly, the freezing winter time is actually a good choice for a Québec visit if you’re interested in the city’s culture. There are festivals galore at this time of year, but you will have to wrap up very warm. The summer months are also full of events, and have much warmer weather. However, keep in mind that this is peak season, so hotels and attractions will be much busier.
