Surfside Beach is a town known for its family activities and serene sandy beaches. Picturesque golf courses offer idyllic escapes, while theaters and other culture hubs keep adults and kids entertained. Enjoy the hot and sunny summer weather on this coastal retreat.
The town’s parks have courts for tennis, bocce and shuffleboard, a game involving discs and a cue stick. Bring your children to see the namesake stretch of sand, Surfside Beach, which is cleaned daily and has lifeguards during the summer. Stroll near the wooden Surfside Beach Pier and photograph the town and the water at sunrise or sunset through the pier’s supporting pillars.
Go swimming with your little ones in the Atlantic Ocean or take them to the Wild Water & Wheels water park. Have fun with the range of slides, a lazy river and a wave pool, as well as a racing track and a mini-golf course. For real golf, practice your swing at the Tupelo Bay Golf Center, which has an 18-hole executive course and a 9-hole par-3 course, as well as other fun activities such as soccer golf and disc golf.
On rare rainy days, the town provides myriad sheltered options. Search for gems among the antiques, jewelry and clothing in Hudson's Surfside Flea Market, which has been operating since 1975. Visit the 400 open-air stalls in the 70,000-square-foot (6,500-square-meter) covered space.
The town is a little southwest along the Atlantic Coast from Myrtle Beach, in the southeastern part of South Carolina. Drive for 8 miles (13 kilometers) from Myrtle Beach International Airport to get here in less than 20 minutes. While you’re in the area, consider visiting nearby communities such as Garden City, Murrells Inlet and Burgess.
Surfside Beach is a fun setting for an ideal family vacation.
