We were flying round trip to Tel Aviv from the USA . Upon our return, the customs process was not properly communicated to us by air canada staff. At the Tel Aviv airport , we were told that our bags would be checked all the way to Washington National and that we’d go through Customs there. When we got to Montreal , an Air Canada staff asked us where we to where we were connecting and told us that we must collect our bags before connecting to our next flight. This seemed odd to me, since I’ve made lots of international connections, but I supposed she was correct because I understood that we were going through the Customs process in Montreal. So, we waited at baggage claim for a period of time. When our bags didn’t arrive, we spoke to an agent at the Air Canada lost baggage desk , who told us that our bags did indeed get checked all the way to Washington National. So we preceded to the Customs and Passport Control Area, all the time thinking that we’d have to repeat the process again at Washington National Airport. At the end, I understood that I could simply collect my bag at DCA and head home . The process for US citizens should be properly conveyed to the Air Canada staff and properly communicated to customers .
