Eagles Rest on Kilcher Family Homestead in Alaska the Last Frontier Kachemak Bay

Family-friendly vacation home in Homer
A beautiful, hand crafted log cabin, fully outfitted, next to an Alaskan historic site of rich significance & space. Can accomodate large groups (4 bedrooms and loft) or small. Each log in this cabin was carefully downed, limbed, crafted, notched, and fitted by a long time homesteader, Atz Kilcher. Sitting above stunning scenery, the cabin provides modern amenities in a rustic setting. A mix of antique furniture with modern and log style furniture in the kitchen, living room and downstairs bedrooms. Bamboo kitchen flooring is a treat and the cabin has been lovingly maintained (new downstairs shower, new laundry & high end machines, new tiling and carpeting throughout). We have provided a wood stove with a custom built rock hearth for ambience, but has upstairs and downstairs oil heat for convenience.
The large master bedroom overlooks a view you will never forget (think Kachemak Bay, glaciers, mountains, pink and purple sunsets and, admittedly more rarely, the aurora borealis), and there is a small bedroom right next door if you have a youngster you prefer to keep close, and two window nooks that even adults sleep in. The older kids or adult guests will enjoy the two bedrooms on the lowest level. Sited on a 50 acre parcel next to a homestead where eight children of an early State Senator and writer grew up in an austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin.
Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres to hike in if you desire along with access to the beach via one of only two beach access sites outside of Homer on the near side of McNeil Canyon. During the summer the Kilcher Homestead Living Museum offers tours of the Homestead cabin built by Ruth and Yule as well as self guided tours/hike to the beach (donation/contribution varies). There is a meadow/pasture above the house that is fun to explore. There are also meadows, and other interesting land features surrounding the cabin. It is not unusual to see moose, black bear (shy ones), porcupines, sandhill cranes, eagles, hawks, song birds, marmots, seals and other wild life on the Kilcher Homestead.

Unbelievable property. No words to describe!!!

Short Stay
Just wanted to leave a short review about the property so renters are not shocked. Pros: beautiful land and view, manager is very nice and kind - however Is at the house constantly, even came into the house while we were gone to retrieve something she “forgot” Cons: just so every renter is aware this property is over a mile from the ocean (even though listed as ocean front) you have to drive to the trail to walk a mile to the beach, and you are charged $15 dollars each to hike to the beach (and it’s a hike) The house is nice, but old. It has multiple bunk beds in small rooms, master is nice, however other rooms are cramped. At checkout you are expected to strip all beds, take your own trash somewhere on top of a cleaning fee and a “manager charge” which I wasn’t aware of until the day after we left. Also, AFTER we checked in and had the property rented for months the manager notified us that the entire property would be closed one of the days we had rented… probably should inform renters of this and not charge full price. This was disappointing- so we left a day early so we could enjoy Alaska elsewhere

Beautiful views
We absolutely loved the property and had an amazing time. The scenery was truly special. However... we did not get the privacy we paid for. We wanted a secluded cabin for our honeymoon, but the property owners were around our cabin way too much for that private slice of heaven we paid for. All-in-all, it was a great experience, but particularly because it was our honeymoon and the price isn’t on the lower end, more privacy would have been appreciated.

5/5 Excellent

Fun experience.
Offers a scenic cabin with a spectacular view that can not be beat.
