"Toward the end of a recent, three-week trip in the UK, I checked into the Mercure Hotel in Perth, which cleverly occupies a former mill, complete with a waterwheel in the lobby! After experiencing similar chain hotels (without water wheels) in other cities (Bath, Birmingham, Sheffield, and Manchester), I felt that I have a sense for the industry standard, and the Perth Mercure easily rose to the top. The rooms are not as "slick" as others in more modern buildings, but none of my pet peeves found any room to grow. Plenty of accessible outlets, a phone, a kettle with instant coffee and milk, a really solid breakfast and, most importantly, a staff that seemed determined to make my stay a more positive experience. All my questions about Perth were fielded with no little knowledge of and pride in the city. There is only one thing that tripped me up at the Mercure: the spotty wifi reception in my room. Maybe it's a function of thick mill walls. To the credit of the staff, I was allowed to make use of a conference room in the hotel where the signal was strong. My recommendation for the property: invest in more in state-of-the-art Wifi. Then this review would be 6 out of 5!"
