Strasbourg is a city with two sides. On the other hand, it's the official seat of the European Parliament and one of France's most dynamic university cities. This dual function is reflected everywhere, from Strasbourg's diverse neighborhoods to its myriad hotels, which span corporate behemoths to cute inns. The only time it might be difficult to find a great place to stay is December, when the city is taken over by one of the best and most-visited Christmas markets in Europe.

Best Places to Stay for Sightseeing

Every trip to Strasbourg should start on the canal-encircled Grande Île, the city's UNESCO-listed Historic Center. Hotels along these winding lanes are ideally located for Strasbourg's top sights, including the cathedral, the Palais Rohan and the Historical Museum of the City of Strasbourg. This is also the best spot to feast on Alsatian specialties such as tarte flambée and coq au Riesling in cozy wine lounges known as winstubs. Stay on or close to the canals of Petite-France to see the quarter at its most photogenic. The pastel-hued timber-framed houses are at their most impressive at dawn and twilight.

Where to Stay for the Christmas Market

Strasbourg is internationally renowned for its Christmas Market, or Marché de Noël, during which about 300 chalet stalls set up on the Grande Île from late November to the end of December.
