The remains of Soda Springs, one of 49 mineral spring that attracted visitors to this area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The springs were developed by the Longmire family, who first settled the area in 1883 after building a wagon trail from Ashford, 13 miles (21 km) away. In addition to improving the springs, the Longmires constructed a series of cabins, tents, a 5-room hotel, and hiking trails to Paradise.

By 1915 the Longmires and the National Park were no longer seeing eye-to-eye, and the Longmires leased the property to a hotelier, who improved and continued to operate the springs until the National Park Service purchased the property in 1939. You can visit the remains of a few mineral springs and an 1888 cabin by hiking the short and flat Trail of Shadows loop (0.7 mi/1.1 km). It's an easy walk, and there's a nice view of Mount Rainier from the meadows.

"This was a great location to access Mt Rainier Nat’l Park early before the summer crowds. The house was very clean, kitchen was well stocked, and king bed was super comfortable. The porch and yard were inviting, and we had a nightly visit by blacktail deer and fawns. Highly recommend! "

The steep stairs to the attic lack a handrail and the older members of our family didn't feel comfortable going up there. I was nervous about our 2 kids going up and down those stairs as well. "This was a great place to stay for visiting the park. Loved getting into the hot tub after a full day of hiking and the house was very clean. Our only issues were that the WiFi wasn’t working so we couldn’t watch tv at night, knives in the kitchen are so dull it was hard to cut a bell pepper, and the furniture and beds/ pillows were not comfortable. We loved the yard for birding. There is a steller’s jay nesting nearby and we saw lot of Ravens, sparrows, swallows, finches and warblers....

"I think the biggest thing is your expectations for the Gateway Inn. It's not a 5 star place, but it's cute, cozy, amd rustic. The location is excellent, literally outside the park entrance. The cabin inside was decently clean. Bedding is worn, but we had plenty of space. The person working the front was very friendly. I thought the bed was comfortable, but my 6'5" husband did not. Overall not a bad place."

"We stayed in the Roselea’s Suite, it was very cute and vintage. The bed was comfortable and I loved the creaking floors, the whole vibe reminded me of grandma’s house. The owners were quick to take care of us when we needed them and I loved how convenient the location was. The room is above the restaurant so if the windows are closed and the air is on, we can’t hear it and the aroma isn’t overpowering. Next time we’ll bring swim suits, we didn’t know the hot tub was so close!"
