Framed by a magnificent cathedral and charming streets lined with churches and restaurants, this neighborhood rests at the very heart of Florence.

The Duomo district surrounds Florence Cathedral with its spectacular Renaissance dome. Walk in any direction and you’ll arrive at art galleries and enchanting shops amid medieval alleys and atmospheric squares.

Known in Italian as Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral dominates the skyline as one of the world’s largest churches. The façade is a marvel of rose, green and white marble, with statues and geometric figures. See the marble mosaic floor and stained-glass windows inside. Climb 463 steps to the top of the dome. Giotto’s Campanile, the highest point of the bell tower, also offers panoramic views.

The Florence Baptistery of St. John is opposite the cathedral at the Piazza del Duomo. Shaped as an octagon, the historical building features a cupola with golden mosaics visible from inside. Set aside time to explore other historic churches within walking distance, including the Church of Santi Apostoli and the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Stroll to Piazza della Signoria and many of the city’s most famous buildings. Take a photo of the copy of Michelangelo’s David in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. Inside the fortress palace, see opulent decorations and artworks. Just steps away is the Uffizi Gallery with an extraordinary collection of Italian Renaissance art housed in the Palazzo degli Uffizi. Admire the original sculpture of David at the Gallery of the Academy of Florence.

Another main square, Piazza della Repubblica was the center of the city in Roman times. Now, it’s the place for street performers and restaurants that attract artists across the ages. When you’re ready for shopping, Via Tornabuoni is lined with Italian fashion houses and luxury jewelry stores. Book tickets for a show at the historic Teatro della Pergola.

Find a large range of hotels in the Duomo neighborhood within walking distance of the main attractions. Fly to Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport for the 30-minute drive or public transportation ride to the center of the city.
