This stylish park atthe southernmost tip of Manhattan is a destination for one of the best sunsetsin the city.

This waterfront parkis a favorite destination for New Yorkers and tourists alike, offering a quietrefuge from the hustle and bustle of downtown New York. Overlooking the NewYork Bay, Battery Park is the departure point for many of New York’s ferries,including the Staten Island, Ellis Island and Liberty Island ferries. Named forthe battery that protected the city during the 17th century, the park is fullof history, and has played an important role in shaping contemporary New Yorkculture. Visitors to the park can discover this through the monumentsthroughout the park, while enjoying one of the best sunsets in the city.

Walk through the 25acres (10.1 hectares) of parkland to discover its attractions. Public gardensare much needed in a city as dense as New York, and locals frequent the parkfor jogging, socializing or and picnics. Do some people-watching, or join inyourself.

Enjoy a picnic in thegardens, a popular activity for families. From your spot on the grass, you’llhave stunning panoramic views. Gaze across the bay to the Statue of Liberty in onedirection, or turn around to see the dramatic cityscape of Lower Manhattan inthe other. Battery Park is a very popular spot to be at sunset, as the viewsacross the bay are considered some of the best in New York.

Find the monumentsscattered throughout the park that reflect the important issues of the city.Visit the Sphere, the sculpture that once stood in the center of the WorldTrade Center plaza, and see the eternal flame that was lit to remember theSeptember 11 tragedy. Battery Park is also home to the Hope Garden, a memorialfor victims of the AIDS virus.

BatteryPark is located on the southernmost tip of Manhattan, and is best reached bytrain. The Whitehall and Bowling Green stations are both situated at the edgeof the park. Visitors arriving from New Jersey or Staten Island can reach thepark by ferry, as the main ferry terminal for New York City is located next tothe park. Battery Park is open daily, and there is no fee for admission.

Governors Island was closed and no one told us. It doesn't say it on the website either. My husband was stationed there in the early 80s and we were very disappointed not to be able to see it.

We did not go out to the Statue of Liberty but did visit Battery Park. Haven’t been here in years. Very nice to see how clean it was!

Worthwhile when the weather cooperates. Also, the ferries that go to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are located there.
