The great outdoors become truly spectacular at Québec’s Lac-Jacques-Cartier, not far from Québec City. Hikers will be excited to explore scenic trails, ranging from 3 to 9 miles (5 to 15 kilometers), winding through incredible settings. Plan on getting a healthy workout before returning to your campsite or lodging.
Choose from an assortment of trails, such as La Croisée, which is a moderate hike alongside a river. Boucle du Sommet de Camp Mercier provides elevation that allows for awesome panoramic views during your walk. To get splendid lake views, the Sables Lake Loop has enchanting sights along the way. Most trails are open throughout the year, as they’re also wonderful for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking.
Stay at a lake campsite at Camping La Loutre Réserve Faunique des Laurentides, with more than 100 places. If you prefer a chalet, pick one on the lake with a dock. As the area is a wildlife reserve, enjoy all the advantages of being able to fish just steps away from your accommodations. Don’t forget winter, when skating and ice fishing take over.
The colder months are also very popular at the lake. The cabins at Camp Mercier become a small town of skiers conveniently located near ski and snowshoe trails. Look for ski amenities, a boutique and a restaurant in the vicinity.
In the sprawling natural region surrounding the lake, you’ll also find an 18-hole golf course, Mont Tourbillon. Cool off at Village Vacances Valcartier, with its indoor and outdoor water attractions and marathon toboggan runs in winter. The ice hotel here is a popular spot.
Drive the 30-mile (50-kilometer) distance from downtown Québec City to Parc National de la Jacques-Cartier or cycle along Corridor des Cheminots. Enjoy the Lac-Jacques-Cartier region any time of year.
