The oldest park in Newcastle is still fresh and active today, with a scenic fishing lake, several sports fields and a children’s play area.

Having been opened by politician Sir Charles Hamond in 1873, Leazes Park is a living part of history in the heart of Newcastle. Children playing and sunbathers sprawling across the grassy mounds are among the summer sights in this 35-acre (14-hectare) park, which has a vast and leafy terrain and a picturesque water feature. Visit Leazes Park with your family on a sunny day to enjoy the city center’s glorious greenery.

Bring supplies for a picnic under the trees along the lakeshore. Go on a family stroll along the promenade that wraps around the large lake, which has ducks and a small island dense with trees. A large photo frame stands near the lake, inviting you to take the perfect photo of the bucolic surroundings. In spring and summer, inspect the colorful floral arrangements.

In the shadow of St. James’ Park, the famous soccer stadium of Newcastle United FC, the park is a major hub for the city’s public sports. Join a game of soccer or cricket on the grass or head to the basketball court to watch a game. Practice your backhand on the tennis courts or revel in the slower pace of the bowling green.

Study the baroque gateways and fences that have been restored and renovated from the park’s early days. Check out online photos of the park from the beginning of the 20th century and compare them to the modern-day setting. The park layout was designed by developer John Laing in the 19th century.

Leazes Park is in the northwestern corner of the city center of Newcastle. Walk north from the St. James metro station for a few minutes to reach the park, which lies along the northern side of the stadium for Newcastle United soccer team.

Combine your visit to Leazes Park with stops at other attractions such as the Great North Museum-Hancock and Morden Tower.
