Backpacking hostel close to central londonPosted Sep 1, 2014
Pros: The staff
Cons: Breakfast. Unlimited toast but one croissant each and thats it. You've got a nice big kitchen back there. Do something more with it!
Location: Didn't use the local area because we went into central London every day
Stayed here with my partner and 2 kids for 2 nights. For those wanting a hotel, this isn't it! It's a hostel! That said for those wanting somewhere to dump there luggage and sleep when they're not touring around London then this is it. We paid £260 for a family of four for 2 nights. On a per head basis it works out pretty cheap. Just don't expect too much at that price!

Basic room with poor facilitiesPosted Aug 26, 2014
The room is very basic, provided with the usual kettle, coffee & tea etc. However, the facilities are really disappointing! First of all, the bathroom sink is VERY small and not practical at all. We are both normal size adults, and found it very difficult to brush our teeth or washing our faces using the sink. And you can't refill the standard size kettle using the sink because it won't fit. Second, the shower is OVER POWERED (ensuite)! It might sounds weird but it's true. We both love strong shower, but this is unbelievably strong, it's like somebody throwing sticks at you. We're not even sure whether it's safe to use- definitely not for children, and not for normal adults (unless you have skins like an elephant). And the hostel is quite noisy throughout our stay, this is understandable since it's a hostel after all. People talked loudly at night or early in the morning, and the cleaners start hovering rather early in the morning! Breakfast is basic, and there is a rule that you can't have more than 1 croissant, but you can have any many toast as you want. It's in a good location though, 5-10mins walk to the tube (zone 2), and close to local supermarkets. Anyway, I suppose you get what you paid for.

Nice Hostel but a bit far from city centerPosted Aug 9, 2014
The hostel is clean and nice. They even have several computers with amazing wifi speed for guests to use. You may also print documents for a very small fee. A group of middle school age students were there too when we stayed and unfortunately for us-they were banging on doors and making a lot of noise even at 1:00 am. Throughout my entire Europe trip, guests at other hostels/hotels have been quiet and polite. I know that's out of the hostel's control but maybe next time put them in a separate floor. The hostel is a bit far from the city center (not within walking distance)-usually I don't mind distance but London's public transportation is pretty expensive especially when the pound is much stronger than the dollar. However, the hostel is inexpensive and a good stay so unless I can find a decently priced hotel/hostel within walking distance from attractions, I would book Palmers Lodge again.

DisappointingPosted Aug 7, 2014
Cons: Fix the showers, and do something about the sound problems in the basement
Location: Near tube, overground, and busses
I suspect anyone who is not so unfortunate as to get a room directly below the bar would find this hostel adequate. However, when they organise special events (watching the Football World Cup) directly above rooms they advertise as "accommodation", the noise levels are ridiculous. I finally asked for help or any bed where it was possible to sleep after putting up with less than 4 hours of sleep per night; I was told they would 'see what they could do', but in the end was left waiting for another two weeks. I left exhausted, upset, and disappointed. After trying twice to address the matter politely and in person, I was ignored. Eventually, the hostel responded - after two emails - and completely ignored the issue of it being impossible to sleep underneath a loud bar in a room with no sound insulation. Instead, they nitpicked on two side issues: firstly, suggesting that the spider I found on my face a week after arriving had somehow hidden in my bag for a 24 hour plane journey and then decided to lay dormant for a week; and secondly condescendingly suggesting that "you must understand that it is a shared fridge and accidents do happen" in response to my food being stolen. They proved unwilling to respond to legitimate questions about how, a) when the basement noise issue is well-known, they are unwilling to even attempt to offer any place where it is possible to sleep, and b) how it is possibly reasonable to have "out of order" bathrooms for over three weeks during Summer.

High quality furniture and comfort, great pricePosted Jun 23, 2014
Pros: Security, closeness to tube, comfort, pleasant staff.
Cons: The showers could be improved, as well as airflow/air conditioning in rooms. The breakfast needed an extra choice to make it more exciting.
Location: Tube station is five minute walk. 15 minute tube ride to central London.
Very nice hostel. Clean, organised, and extremely friendly and helpful staff. The free breakfast is basic, but enough to start your day. Five minute walk from tube station is very handy. The room was clean and secure with electronic card locks (you even get your own cupboard to secure your stuff, which is also secured with an electronic card lock, excellent!). Bunk beds were very easy to climb up. You can access the top bunk without disturbing anyone else. Shower facilities were good, albeit a little too few shower cubicles. Excellent hostel 10 minutes away from central London on the tube!
