A great budget option for exploring the town. There is a beautiful pool and terrace overlooking the river. Good for walking to the sights; very quiet here.

A clean, comfortable convenient place.
I found the accommodation to be comfortable, clean and convenient. The add-on breakfast buffet was also a good value. My only complaint was that no one was there for me to check in for at least five or 10 minutes. Supposedly you could check in until 10 PM and I arrived at about 9:15 PM, other than that my three night stay, there was very good.

Stumbled upon this lovely hotel while travelling across the countryside … what a gem this is. The rooms are small but very comfortable. We had a fever view and it was wonderful. The staff are friendly and helpful. We will be back.

Great location in the heart of Mertola, a very historic Portuguese town. Has great views of both the castle and the river. Best of all is the staff! This is my fourth stay at Beira Rio and I’m already looking forward to my next stay.

A nice hotel overlooking the river in Merterol. The room was nice and large but the bed was slightly hard. The breakfast which was paid for separately is not really value for money.

The location is great. We had a big terrace overlooking the river. They have a pool and free parking. Not fancy, but great value.

No reception had to sign in at the next hotel down though probably the same owners/group and breakfast was out with hotel, walls in room are paper thin could hear neighbours brushing they’re teeth and staircase up to first floor very narrow, over cleanliness and staff are above average

This property is attractive and cozy and ideally situated -- within the heart of the old city and overlooking the river! We loved our stay. We took the river boat ride which was exceptional and welcomed after a day of driving. The staff booked us into the corner room with a spacious terrace looking directly at the river below. It was a comfortable, well appointed room. Their is a bar in the adjacent hotel and the staff would gladly interrupt their work to make you a perfectly crafted drink of your choice! The staff is the difference maker here. They consistently practice "the customer comes first" and make you feel valued. We will be back!

Recommend for picturesque location
Great location, quiet and very picturesque overlooking the river. Enjoyed sitting on the balcony enjoying a wine as the sun set. Walking distance to all tourist sites in the town and restaurants.The staff were so friendly and helpful and recommended a fantastic family restaurant. Wished we were able to spend longer.

Used this hotel as a one night stopover on a motorcycle trip through Portugal. Room was basic but clean with a lovely view over the river. Breakfast was standard continental and bar prices were very reasonable. Choice of restaurants available in town. Boat trips available on the river for €10pp.

The location was spot on and the view was very appealing. It is a hilly town so beware but the architecture and landscape is so lovely that before you know it, you've climbed your way up to the castle which is amazing as castles in Portugal go. The hotel itself is charming and would be fine for longer than just one night. The common spaces include several sitting rooms as well as a kitchen. The breakfast was standard fare but very tasty. I would recommend this venue to my friends and would stay again if in the area.

A wonderful guesthouse
Loved our stay in Mertola and the friendly people at Beira Rio. Wish there was a washing machine as the only option for doing laundry was paying them to do it for you. Otherwise a perfect stay. Great buffet breakfast for 5 Euro a person. Would stay here again.

Beiro Rio review - Mewrtola.
Older hotel overlooking the river with small rooms, but it had a charm. Limited TV in room but full range in lounge. Breakfast continental. Generally a pretty hotel and nice for a relaxing break in Mertola, which has a good selection of historic visit centres and some activities on the river. A few nice shops and some local eateries. Breakfast came as extra and payment was at the hotel. River view room is worth the extra few Euro. We are glad to have visited the interior of Portugal.

The old town of Mertola and the castle were absolutely great, the hotel was not. I had asked for one double bed and got 2 twins shoved together. We arrived at 4 and noticed a placard on the front desk saying that there was a last river cruise at 5. We asked him if they sold beer on board as we were tired and thirsty after our drive from Evora. He said no. Val and I discussed how we could have a beer there and just make the boat. We got to the boat at 10 to 5 and waited until 5:15 to bag it. Back at the hotel, we told him that the boatman never showed. He said that he never waits there and "if we had made a reservation we would have made it." The need for a reservation was not on the placard and never mentioned it to us even though it was abundantly clear that we wanted to go on this our only night here. Terrible passive-aggressive behavior.The breakfast was extra and so-so.

Great hotel, a bit of difficulty with language but we muddled through. Fantastic view of the river, would loved to have stayed longer. Terrible pillow, but that seems to be the norm
