    Pocket Guide: Portugal

Portugal is often overshadowed by Spain, the northern neighbor with which it shares the Iberian Peninsula. However, Portugal offers a travel experience just as fascinating with fewer crowds and at noticeably cheaper prices. You can find a number of cheap hotel deals in Portugal, particularly in Lisbon, Colmbra, Sintra, and Porto, that will help you stretch your tourism dollars even further.

Like Rome, Portugal's capital, Lisbon, spans seven hills. St. George's Castle, a fortified Moorish-style citadel, sits on the highest hill in the Moorish Alfama quarter. Closer to the Tagus River is the Jerónimos Monastery, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its phantasmagorical architecture. The most interesting of Lisbon's many museums may be the Museu da Farmácia, which covers the history of pharmacology from 4,000 B.C. to the Space Age. There are many fine Portugal hotels and designer boutiques on Avenida da Liberdade, while Rossio Square is the place to shop for leather goods, port, and cherry liqueur.

Portugal's other cities and towns are equally entrancing. Coastal Sintra, a day trip from Lisbon, has castles and buildings dating back to the eighth and ninth centuries. The English poet Lord Byron called Sintra the most beautiful town in the world. In medieval times, Tomar was the headquarters for the mysterious Knights Templars, and their architectural monuments dominate the cityscape. Guimarães to the north is another city whose historic architecture is well preserved. Guimarães is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Explore Serra de Arrábida, the beautiful park located in the Sado River estuary along the Arrábida Hills. Sun lovers will discover a number of secluded beaches in Arrábida perfect for romantic picnics. Film fans may recognize its stretch of road as the highway where Irma Bund shoots Tracy Bond at the end of the James Bond movie, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." In the spring and early summer, Arrábida is covered with a glorious mantle of wild flowers. Alentejo is another scenic destination in the countryside, a rural landscape scattered with olives and Portugal's famous, indigenous cork trees.

Portugal is a destination that consistently gives good value for your tourism dollars, and you'll find many top Portugal hotel packages and other great Portugal hotel deals from Expedia. Portugal isn't the travel secret it once was, though, and in the spring, summer, and early fall, hotels in Portugal can fill up fast. To ensure the best, cheap Portugal hotel deal and reservations at special discount rates, book your rooms well in advance.

"Great hotel at a fantastic location."
Lovely hotel at excellent location. Busy location but our room remained quiet. Loved the beautiful dining room and fantastic breakfast buffet. Also loved the Nespresso machine in the room. WiFi was great with easy log on. We had the Pop floor. Didn't care much for the bubblegum scent. Had a problem with odor coming from the bathroom. Asked staff to fix it and it seemed better, but it got bad again. Turned out that the odor was coming from the bathroom sink. With the stopper closed there was no smell, but that's a bit inconvenient. The hotel offered to move us, but we stayed, thinking that the problem had been fixed, then when we realized that it hadn't been fixed, we were too lazy to move, since we were leaving the next day anyway. The shower is a bit crazy to use. Too many gadgets. Not sure what showers are like in other rooms, but the one we had would have been a problem for someone very tall and heavy. Loved the complimentary L'Occitane shampoo, soaps and lotions. Very friendly and helpful staff. If I come back to Lisbon, I would stay at this hotel again.

    "Relaxing"
Chose this hotel as it was away from the busy town etc. Got exactly what I wanted. It was lovely and quiet the pool had at most 10 people at it at one time. Pool was quite cold but you quickly got used to it. Only issue I'd have is at lunch time. Only lunch available was at the club house. Which was fine as it was a short walk. However the menu needs to be improved. I didn't go to Portugal to eat chicken tikka masala and fish and chips every day. The option of fresh fish, vegetables and rice should always be available and not a once a week special. Dinner is a buffet of €25 each. It's very well done and a lovely selection of food with good service. Breakfast was the usual with the chef there to cook omelettes as requested. At the end of my stay there was a very large group of men. Possibly a stag. They were allowed to take the conference room which is beside the games room. They were so loud on multiple nights I went back to my room to have some peace. Overall was a good place to stay in October. If you want somewhere you can walk to the beach or the shops this is not the place for you. Ideal for peace away from the city and obviously if you enjoy golf.

"Exceptional facilities and service, great views"
This hotel is stunning. It is perched at the end of of a point with amazing views in every direction and a free bus into Funchal, although our son and daughter both walked in. We cannot have anything but praise for the service we received. It was our daughter's third visit, our first, and it was her birthday during our stay. We were treated like royalty. We were offered a complementary upgrade; as a returner our daughter was given Madeira wine and honey cake in her room; on her birthday she was left a rose in her room and a bottle of Portuguese bubbly. Check in was at 3.00pm, we arrived at 11.00am and we were immediately shown to our room;similarly we were allowed a late check out as our flight was not until 6.30pm. There are too many examples of the good, friendly service to list here but it was exceptional; nothing was too much trouble. Madeira is a beautiful island, mountainous interior, flowers everywhere. It is geared to the tourist, but you feel like a guest rather than potential income; I felt very safe. Most people spoke English. We recommend the tours, organized walks for all abilities in the mountains, toboggan run in a basket down a steep hill! Boat trip round the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Gardens everywhere. Cable car ride.

    "An excellent stay"
Our stay in March was spent at this excellent hotel, staff were friendly and courteous ,food was of a very high standard and as we used the buffet rather than A La Carte there was always more than enough choice and quantity. We booked a 'side sea view studio' but were given a central studio with direct views over the pool and gardens of the sea, it comprised 3 rooms, a large comfortable lounge large bedroom and sizeable bathroom with a kitchen diner in the lounge area. The gardens require special note as they are so beautiful and well kept, the overall design of the hotel kept the buildings integrated with the gardens to give pleasant and unspoilt garden. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit Madiera. There is a bus stop 100 yards from the hotel where a 2.2euro ride to Funchal can be taken about every 45mins.
