North York

Toronto
Edward Gardens which includes forests, a river or creek and a garden
Visit an area with green space, varied activities and plentiful shopping. Served efficiently by public transportation, this suburb is convenient to Downtown Toronto.

Travel about 8 miles (13 kilometers) north of Toronto, Canada’s largest city, to North York where plenty of attractions keep families entertained. An attractive urban park, Downsview Park, is located within the district. The sprawling park occupies the space of a former military base. Visit North York to enjoy activities throughout the year, from concerts to educational and sporting events.

A former hangar for World War II aircraft has been repurposed in the large park. The massive building is used as a multipurpose recreational facility with indoor fields and courts, along with a restaurant. Follow the 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) loop path that takes you through an apple orchard and to a lake area with its own path.

For other nature walks, the Toronto Botanical Garden offers themes throughout its nearly 35 acres (14 hectares). Walk among thousands of plants on display and visit the seasonal café, farmers market and garden shop.

Formerly a separate site, Edwards Gardens is now part of the botanical garden. This one-time estate garden features many perennials and roses. Join one of the free tours for individuals and small groups held regularly during the summer.

For an interactive approach to learning about scientific principles and phenomena, include the Ontario Science Centre in your itinerary. Experience a simulated tornado and a rainforest environment. Explore the universe in the space section and planetarium or discover the human body’s potential and its limits. The special KidSpark activities for children under age 9 allows them to learn about science through play. Watch the current show in the center’s IMAX theater.

Learn about Islamic civilizations and the contributions Muslims have made to society at the Aga Khan Museum. The modern, light-filled building in North York includes exhibition galleries and a 335-seat theater. The museum’s formal gardens provide a space for contemplation and reflection.

Drive from Downtown Toronto to North York in about 20 minutes or travel by subway in about 40 minutes.
