While in Bournemouth, plan to visit Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, housed in a majestic mansion by the sea that was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Within its walls lies a great wealth of period décor and works of art. Bring your family to this eclectic hub, which has a range of activities for kids.
Arrive outside the villa and admire the cone-like spires topping the busy façade, which has a striking white balcony and green frames. Enter the site and inspect the impressive works on display in the main collection. Temporary exhibits cover contemporary works of art and other intriguing themes. Let your kids frolic in the play area and fill out the detective sheet to find certain images in the house.
Relax with sandwiches and cakes in the museum’s café. Consider attending Board Game Friday. On a sunny day, head outside to the stunning gardens where highlights include the Victorian stone grotto and fountain that have survived here since the early 1900s. Wander along the elegant bridges of the Japanese garden and spot large goldfish in the pond.
Talk with the docents about the history of the house, which was built by the mayor of Bournemouth for his wife. Enjoy the stunning views of the sea from this cliff-top vantage point.
Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum is in the southeastern corner of the Bournemouth city center. Get the bus to the stop just outside the gallery, a short walk inland from the English Channel. The site is open Tuesday, Wednesday and the weekend from morning until late afternoon. There is an admission fee, with discounts for kids and students. Children under the age of 5 can enter for free.
While in this area, visit some of the surrounding landmarks, including the Red Arrows Memorial, the Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre and the Grosvenor Casino Bournemouth.
