Beaches and leafy gardens create a serene and picturesque destination in Seongsan, a district overlooking the South Sea in the corner of Jeju Island. Rising as an omnipresent symbol of beauty from the area’s northern region is Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak). Explore the labyrinth of hiking trails leading over this rolling natural terrain.
Climb up the meandering paths of Seongsan Ilchulbong to reach the crater of this fascinating geological formation, which rose from the sea about 5,000 years ago. Admire the yellow canola flowers lining the path as you make the ascent. Enjoy spectacular views of the sunrise from the crater’s ridge.
Take photos of the vista of the peak from the fine golden sand of Sinyang Beach, a little south along the coast. Relax with your family on the strand and go for a dip in the clear and shallow water. The site has a sailing education center, allowing you to rent equipment to take out on the South Sea. Right next to the beach is the Aqua Planet Jeju, an impressive aquarium showcasing marine creatures from around the world, as well as penguins and reptiles.
Travel by ferry from the Seongsan Port across to the islet of Udo and feel the warm, white sands of Udo Maritime Park between your toes. Submarine tours and old stone tombs are among the area’s fascinating highlights.
Back on Jeju Island, visit the scenic garden and water feature of Honinji Pond and listen to legends of princesses and demigods surrounding its inception.
Seongsan occupies the southeastern corner of the island of Jeju, just off the coast of Busan in South Korea. From Jeju International Airport, head east along the shoreline of the island until you reach this district. Make sure to see nearby areas such as Hallasan National Park, Hamdeok Beach and the island of Udo.
