See American history come to life at attractions dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, hop between varied bars and restaurants and celebrate the nostalgia of Route 66.

Downtown Springfield presents a glimpse into the life, work and legacy of one of the nation’s best-known presidents. This pedestrian-friendly neighborhood has historic landmarks and museums related to Abraham Lincoln, as well as lively bars, galleries and performing arts venues. Delve into American history and experience the vintage years of Route 66 on a visit to Downtown Springfield.

Start at Union Square Park, which has a gazebo, grassy lawns and statues of Lincoln. The stark Acts of Intolerance Sculpture commemorates the tumultuous Springfield Race Riot of 1908. Relive Lincoln’s boyhood years, political career and family life via interactive exhibits and original artifacts at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library. The museum spreads throughout several downtown buildings, including Union Station.

Explore deeper into the life of the 16th president of the United States at heritage buildings. Lincoln worked as a lawyer at the Lincoln-Herndon Law Office and served the Illinois House of Representatives at the Old State Capitol. Tour Lincoln’s family home at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. Pedestrian-only Bicentennial Plaza has interpretive panels and links the home with the Governor’s Mansion and Illinois State Capitol.

Change focus with family-friendly fun at the hands-on Kidzeum of Health and Science. For art exhibitions, concerts and theater shows, check the program at Hoogland Center for the Arts.

The Bank of Springfield Center is another venue for concerts, in addition to circuses and sporting events. Enjoy an evening of classical music with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra.

Historic Route 66 passes directly through Springfield. Every September the city honors the iconic highway during the Route 66 Mother Road Festival. Expect displays of vintage Cadillacs, Chevys and hot rods plus night car cruises, live music and street food. Satisfy your taste buds and quench your thirst at farm-to-table restaurants and craft beer bars.

Springfield railway station stands in the heart of Downtown Springfield. Once here, travel around on foot and join walking tours offered by the city’s museums and visitor centers.

"There were quite a few hiccups- including the room we booked not being available and us having to switch rooms. Breakfast was pretty sparse. But honestly, the friendliness of the staff made up for it. They were really nice and super helpful, despite being short staffed and under stocked."

Good value and convenient location
"Overall nice stay and good value if you have a party of 4 or more. We only had two but it was very spacious - it is on the third floor and no elevator - so two flights of stairs is something to know - also you will need to pay for parking in a garage. I was nervous about underground parking. There ..."
