"An amazing experience from start to finish. The location in the Alabama Hills of Lone Pine was absolutely perfect for us during Badwater 135 race week—peaceful and beautiful, with Mount Whitney in the background, yet only a short distance from town. Our host was incredible—friendly, accommodating, and genuinely available 24/7 if we needed anything. With temperatures over 100 degrees, the AC worked perfectly and kept the house cool and comfortable. The kitchen was spacious, spotless, and had everything we needed for race preparation and meals. The entire property was exceptionally clean, comfortable, and well maintained. We couldn’t have asked for a better home base for such an important week. Highly recommend, and we would absolutely stay here again!"

"This property is truly special. I’ve never been able to relax the way I did while at Lone East. Lydia, the owner/host, was just amazing and so welcoming. My only regret is that we didn’t have time to share a glass of wine and get to know her better. Thank you for a very special few days."

"What an amazing place! Got a tip from a local to take a short drive up the Mount Whitney portal and I highly recommend everyone do the same. The views from the room are AMAZING! Waking up to the sunrise on the mountains was something I'll never forget. Communication was fast and very helpful. Highly HIGHLY recommend staying here."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Cartago?
Given that Cartago, California, is a very small, unincorporated community with limited tourist infrastructure, the best area to stay near Cartago is the nearby town of Lone Pine.Lone Pine is the closest community with a selection of accommodations, dining, and services. It's situated at the base of the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, offering clear views of Mount Whitney and the Sierra peaks. The town's main street, US Route 395, is where you'll find most of the motels and restaurants. The Alabama Hills, a popular destination for hiking and film history, are just a short drive west of Lone Pine. This area is ideal for solo travelers and couples looking for convenient access to outdoor activities and a base for exploring the region. For those interested in historical sites and a slightly more developed town experience, Bishop, located about an hour north of Cartago on US Route 395, offers a broader range of hotels, eateries, and shops. Bishop serves as a larger hub for the Eastern Sierra, providing more options for dining and supplies. It's a good fit for families who might appreciate more amenities and choices while still being close to the natural beauty of the region.
When is the best time to go to Cartago?
The best time to visit Cartago is during the spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) when the weather is mild and pleasant for outdoor activities.Spring offers comfortable temperatures, typically ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s Fahrenheit (18-23°C), making it ideal for exploring the natural beauty of the Eastern Sierra. The wildflowers are often in bloom, adding to the scenic appeal. This period is great for active couples looking to hike or enjoy scenic drives without the intense summer heat or winter cold.Fall also provides excellent weather, with temperatures similar to spring and clear skies. The changing leaves in the surrounding mountains create picturesque landscapes, particularly in areas like the nearby Owens Valley.
