Vintage movie palaces have been transformed into modern entertainment venues, while galleries and markets line the alleys of the old town zone of Los Angeles.

A visit to the Historic Core of Los Angeles provides a fascinating insight into some of the city’s oldest and most cherished buildings and institutions. Picturesque green parks complement the old-world theaters and jewelry palaces of a trendy location lined with majestic edifices. Stroll down the narrow alleys between old-fashioned buildings for a glimpse of a bygone architectural period.

Enter the Bradbury Building and marvel at the intriguing aesthetic, consisting of crisscrossing stairways and wrought-iron railings. It was built during the Victorian period. Head upstairs in the so-called birdcage elevators.

Next door stands Grand Central Market, where you can purchase flowers and food from stalls. Attend its game nights and watch movies in the large building that dates back to 1917.

Take a break in nearby Pershing Square, where summer concerts and art exhibitions are often set up. For a picture of the thriving art scene, embark on the Art Walk DTLA and consider buying one-of-a-kind pieces.

Purchase classic records and books in a vintage store and peruse the diamonds and other precious stones on display in the windows of the overlapping Jewelry District.

Explore the modern side of the Historic Core by visiting its trendy restaurants and bars. See a rock concert at the Regent Theater, which began as a cinema in 1914. It has a pizzeria near the stage. Attend a concert at the historic Globe Theatre Los Angeles, a former movie palace that now hosts dance parties. Watch performances at the Los Angeles Theatre Center and marvel at the stunning chandeliers hanging from the ceiling of the majestic Los Angeles Theatre.

Find the Historic Core running along the northern parts of Downtown Los Angeles and Skid Row. Arrive at Union Station and walk southwest for about half an hour to get here. You can also travel by metro to the Pershing Square station or by bus to one of the many stops.

While in this area, make sure to visit surrounding zones such as Little Tokyo, Chinatown and the Fashion District.
