Colorado offers high-altitude adventures for the mind.

Blessed with snow-capped mountains, deep river canyons and endless arid plains, Colorado is usually hailed for its outdoor pursuits. Its museums, however, prove there’s plenty of adventure here for the imagination, too.

Colorado’s inspiring landscapes provide the ideal setting for its art museums, from the Denver Art Museum and the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, to smaller institutions, such as the Leanin’ Tree Museum and Sculpture Garden of Western Art.

In downtown Denver, explore the state’s past, present and future at the History Colorado Center, while at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, a superb planetarium awaits. History lovers will enjoy the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum and Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site.

At the Children’s Museum of Denver, kids can play firefighter or pick up the ingredients for a healthy meal at the pint-sized farmers market. Train buffs will lose all track of time at the Colorado Railroad Museum, which features more than 100 historic locomotives and snowplows.

Colorado is blessed with plenty of niche museums also, so whether you’re into mountaineering, mountain biking, quilting, or ghost towns, there’s a museum for you in Colorado.
