A cultural guide to Beijing
Immerse yourself in China’s expansive capital city, where the vestiges of its imperial past collide with modern art, underground music, and sizzling food
KEY NEIGHBORHOODS
Sanlitun
the vibe
Set just inside the Third Ring Road, this buzzing neighborhood is the heart of Beijing’s shopping, dining and nightlife scenes. During the day, shoppers throng to open-air mall Taikoo Li Sanlitun, which anchors the area, and in the evening, the city’s well-heeled residents pack cocktail bars and Michelin-starred restaurants before heading out to dance until the sun rises.
Where to stay
Wangfujing
the vibe
Wangfujing puts you almost at the geographical center of the city. Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and Jingshan Park are nearby, and many of the city’s best hotels are clustered around here, making it a tried-and-true neighborhood for first-timers to Beijing. If you find the area a bit touristy, wander the surrounding hutongs for a more local experience.
Where to stay
Nanluoguxiang
the vibe
Nestled in the hutongs, this hip neighborhood is lined with shops, cafés and restaurants. While the pedestrian street Nanluoguxiang itself can feel overdeveloped—it was one of the first of the city’s old streets to be renovated—the area’s alleyways and the adjacent area of Gulou offer a taste of traditional Beijing that feels unlike anywhere else in the world.
