Bates Motel

Posted Jun 16, 2014
Pros: The fellow who checked me in was pleasant.
Cons: Everything could be improved. They need to bulldoze the whole thing down and start from scratch.
Location: The motel is right in Walnut Iowa. This little town has lots of antique stores ans several antique fairs outdoors during the summer months.
My husband and I needed a place to stay in Walnut Iowa for an antique fair. The Econo Lodge looked okay in the picture and the reviews were decent, plus everything else was booked. I wasn't looking for the Ritz, just a decent, modern and clean place to stay for one night. The place looked really seedy from the outside, however, the lobby looked reasonably pleasant. I was checked in by a friendly, but seriously under dressed young man. The check in process went well enough, and I was given my keys and directed to my room. The hallways were narrow, dingy and poorly lit. The room was worse than the hallway and the exterior of the building combined, with a generous sprinkling of gross factor thrown in. The bathroom was especially dreadful. Put a couple of items on a shelf under the mirror on the wall, and the shelf partially gave way. Lifted the lid on the toilet and there was evidence that someone had recently taken a number two in there. Nice. Took a shower and found myself standing in three inches of water. Just gross. Two days later, and my back still hurts from sleeping on the slab disguised as a mattress. Recalling my stay makes me want to go take a shower. I hope I didn't catch anything.

Very comfortable and pleasing hotel

Pros: The room decor, it was a very good match with the colors of the local outdoors
Cons: The fact that one of the smoke detectors in the hall way was beeping and needed a new battery.
Location: The location was great right off the Interstate and so easy to find by tired travelers
This hotel was very comfortable and clean. The room decor was bright and cheerful, not bland with an off white color. The breakfast was better than most and the area was large enough to hold several people at the same time. Laundry room was easy to find and use. We hope to stay at this Econo Lodge many more times.
