Tarapoto sits on the edge of the vast jungles of eastern Peru. It's the closest place you can fly to after your forays into the rainforests of the Amazon near Iquitos, in order to reconnect with Peru's road network. There's a wonderfully laid-back vibe here, plenty of street art, local markets, as well as restaurants serving delicious regional specialities, and bars serving drinks made from soaking jungle roots in cane liquor. If you come here, stay at El Mirador. There's a terrace with amazing jungle views and the breakfast they serve is probably one of the best I've eaten in Peru. "Hotel was pretty nice and a good value for the money. Free Airport Shuttle was on-time and very well run. Breakfast was cooked to order most days (though had a buffet the first day there with nice fresh fruit) and pretty tasty. AC worked well in the room. Service was good and mostly responsive to requests, but sometimes a little delayed. Location outside of town was not that bad. 10-minute moto-taxi ride to Tarapoto Main Square (no car taxis usually available, so may be issue if rain...
