Take in the scent of four thousand roses and see cacti, palms and other tropical species growing in this magnificent garden in the heart of Gothenburg.

Just a short walk away from Gothenburg’s central station you can find an oasis of calm. The Garden Society of Gothenburg is a horticultural park, one of the best-preserved 19th-century gardens in Europe. Learn about the amazing collection of exotic trees and plants that were brought back to Sweden by the horticulturists of the 19th century, explore the fabulous rose garden or step into a more temperate climate where plants like agaves and bromeliads thrive.

The Trädgårdsföreningen (Garden Society) was established in 1842. Their selected green space became a place where passionate horticulturists could meet, exchange plants and ideas and display their findings. The community-minded society introduced many podiums and cafés to the park and the social atmosphere remains to this day.

Don’t miss the spectacular Rose Garden, where over 4,000 rose bushes represent nearly half as many species. Early July is the time to see them open in full glory, though there is a second blooming period in August and you can still find some varieties flowering as late as November.

Travel through five continents in just 30 minutes in the magnificent Palmhouse. The 1878 greenhouse was modeled after the Crystal Palace in London with a high dome and cast iron ornaments. In spring and autumn you’ll find Camellia House in bloom. In the summer months the spectacular giant lily in the Water Garden is at its best. Different palm varieties are on display year-round as are ornamental agaves and succulents in the Tropical Area.

Stop for refreshment or a meal in one of the park’s many cafés and restaurants, which are open year-round. In the summer months the park is the venue for concerts, festivals and theater performances. For the event schedule, check the Society’s website.

The Garden Society of Gothenburg is open daily until the early evening. The park is centrally located and can easily be reached on foot from all central Gothenburg hotels and attractions. Entrances are on Slussgatan, Nya Allén and Södra Vägen.
