Gosau is located 95 miles (153 kilometers) east of Innsbruck - Central Tirol and about 140 miles (225 kilometers) west of Vienna, the capital of Austria.
While it can be a temptation to just chill out when visiting Gosau, keep in mind that the surrounding region's treasure-trove of natural and man-made attractions await. For something different, check out the Halstattersee and Hoher Dachstein in and around Hallstatt, which is approximately 6 miles (10 kilometers), from Gosau. Another idea is to make your way over to Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut. It's about 11 miles (18 kilometers) from Gosau and is home to the Seebad and Pfarrkirche St Michael.
Bad Ischl, is another interesting place to visit. It is 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Gosau and offers a diverse range of attractions, including Fahrzeugmuseum, Lehar-Villa and Stadtmuseum. Katrin, Jainzenberg and Kaiservilla are also good places to spend a little time.
Stop at Upper Austria's historic castles, it's a great way to get to know the region's rich past. Whether you're an atheist or one of the faithful, you're sure to find a little enlightenment at Upper Austria's monasteries and other places of worship.
If you like the company of like-minded travelers, this region offers plenty of specialized activities such as city walking tours, guided nature walks and cycling tours. When the mercury rises, take the lead of the locals and head to Upper Austria's much-loved waterways for a spot of boating or swimming.
