Retrace life in Daytona Beach from the city’s prehistoric era and Civil War involvement to its beach racing fame and proud surfing traditions.

The grandiose neoclassical Merchants Bank Building of Daytona provides the setting for the enthralling Halifax Historical Museum. Join history buffs, racing enthusiasts and surf lovers alike to delve into the interesting past of this world-renowned Florida city. Archaeological relics, photography exhibitions and model cars make for a rewarding and educational activity at the Halifax Historical Museum.

Begin by watching a video presentation that gives an overview of the city and its evolution. Archeological relics prove that life here dates back as far as 5000 B.C. Learn about the Spanish and British plantation eras and the Timucua tribespeople of northern Florida. Flags, letters, photos and military paraphernalia highlight how the Civil War, Spanish American War and World War I affected the region.

Get an insight into Daytona’s racing prowess, from the beach races of the early 1900s to NASCAR events. Another display celebrates the surfers of Volusia County and the tireless work of lifeguards. See a scale model of the iconic Daytona Beach Boardwalk and Daytona Beach Pier.

Some of Daytona’s most famous residents are also honored at the museum. Find out about the influence of educator Mary McLeod Bethune, one of the founders of Bethune - Cookman University. Browse artifacts about baseball player Jackie Robinson and the Prohibition-era rum runner William McCoy.

The museum is in the South Beach Street Historic District of Daytona Beach. Drivers can park for free for a limited period on the district’s streets. Combine your tour of the museum with a visit to the cafés, restaurants and shops located along Beach Street. Other city attractions nearby are the Riverfront Park, Jackie Robinson Baseball Park and City Island Park.

Halifax Historical Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday and there’s an admission fee. Discounted entrance is available for children. Admission on Thursdays is by donation. Ask at the reception about special events such as book launches, historian talks and meet-and-greets with local surfers.
