Visit this holy place to learn about its significance for Muslim, Jewish and Christian people and to enjoy panoramic views of Jerusalem.

The Temple Mount (or Haram al-Sharif, as it is known to Muslims) is a raised area situated close to Jerusalem’s Western Wall. It is considered to be among the holiest sites in the world for Muslim and Jewish people, as well as holding great significance for Christians. Visit the Temple Mount complex to admire the iconic Dome of the Rock and to enjoy beautiful vistas of Jerusalem’s Old City.

Learn about the Temple Mount’s fascinating history before you visit. It has been identified as the place where the biblical figure Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son as a show of faith, and is believed to have been the site of the great Jewish Temples. It also hosts several prominent, ancient religious structures. As well as the Dome of the Rock, these include the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Chain.

It is a very special experience seeing the Dome of the Rock, the oldest Islamic shrine in the world. The beautiful architecture of this significant religious site is very special, and it is worth seeing even if you can’t go inside. Admire this ornate blue structure topped with a gold dome, one of the most famous landmarks in the city of Jerusalem. It was built in the 7thcentury alongside the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which sits close by.

Take the time to see the small but elaborate Dome of the Chain too. This open-air structure is thought by some to be a shrine, although not everyone agrees on its purpose. Marvel at how well-preserved it is. Like the larger dome and the mosque, it dates from the 7th century.

Although the key religious sites themselves can only be entered by Muslims, all tourists may visit the Temple Mount area so long as they dress modestly. Take note of the opening times, which vary by the season, and aim to arrive as early as possible to avoid long lines. Carry your passport and leave all non-Islamic religious objects at your hotel to avoid any delays with gaining access to this fascinating and incredibly holy place.

Don't try to go without a tour guide - the wait times are long, the visiting window is tight, and there are very strict rules of conduct. I used Abraham Tours. Non-Muslims cannot go inside the mosques.

Make sure to wear trousers and cover your shoulders, otherwise you’ll need to wear funny clothes. Check out if there any Muslim holidays, as the Temple Mount will be closed. The visitors hours are restricted, make sure be there before 9 am. Take your time and enjoy every angle.
