When it comes to getting the best bang for your buck from your holidays, remember that Ureshino is just the tip of the iceberg; Saga has been blessed with a treasure-trove of scenic delights. Two places within a relatively short distance of Ureshino are Isahaya, 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the north, and Yanagawa, 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the west.
If you're staying in Ureshino, don't forget to visit Nagasaki. Approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) away, this regional transport and shopping hub is home to Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium and Nagasaki Subtropical Botanical Garden. Make sure you don't head back to Ureshino until you've stopped by Nagasaki's Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture, Glover Garden and Tomeizan Kofuku-ji.
No matter if you are following the popular tourist route or heading off the beaten path, picking up a variety of Japanese phrases will bring out the smiles in those you meet. "Isshoni odorimasenka?" is the Japanese way to say "Would you like to dance with me?" "Benjo wa doko desu ka?" translates to "Where's the toilet?"
And at the end of your break, pack up your gear and wish Japan a fond Sayōnara (farewell).
