Good Value, Great Location
I visit San Francisco on business a couple of times a year. This time, as I was on holiday and paying for myself, I wanted a reasonably priced hotel but still wanted a central location as I only had two nights here. I got this with the Bereford. Its only one block back and two blocks up from Saks on Union Square. The cable car was a similar distance away. The main entrance to the San Francisco mall was 10 minutes walk away. This is also where the streetcars to Alcatraz, Fishermans Wharf and Haight Ashbury go from. The hotel was also a pick up point for the Airport Express bus, which was good value at $15 per person one way.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
When I originally booked on Expedia, it said there was no free Internet at the Beresford. However, this must have changed recently as there was. There is a desktop the guests can use (15 minutes maximum if someone else is waiting) and if you have your own portable device, wi-fi is available but the only place you can get a signal is in the same room as the desktop.

Very pleasant
I have only positive things to say. An error by the front desk was taken care of quickly and pleasantly. Indeed, all the staff I encountered were quite nice. Many of the "older" hotels in the area are a bit worn and showing their age, but this property is clean and well kept. My room faced Sutter Street, which is not exactly a side street. (There really are no side streets in that neighborhood). However, the room was remarkably quiet, and combined with a very comfortable bed, I had a great nights sleep. I spend a few days in S.F. every month, and have stayed at a number of hotels in the past. If available, this will be my hotel of choice in the future.
Traveler's tip on dining
If you enjoy Thai food, the "Thai Stick", is a couple of blocks away. (Easily walkable). It is a small family run establishment with great food.

Older but good for price
This is an older hotel located in a great section of town. The staff was great and was very helpfull. Rooms were small but this is normal for this type of hotel. Everything was clean and the bed comfortable. Breakfast was ok and consisted of Breads, Cerals, Fruit and coffee.
Traveler's tip on dining
Stay away from the dinner on the opposite corner. Good food but way to expensive for what you get. Go around the block to Leftys and the food is good, plentyfull, and reasonable(they serve brealfast if you want more than ceral). The Italian on the corner was excellent and for San Francisco very reasonable. They sold 1/2 bottles of wine for a great price. Lastly the Sanwitch place in front of the Villa Florence is great and reasonable.

Good location; mediocre room
The Beresford is located very conveniently, and the price is very reasonable. That said, you do get what you pay for, and the room was pretty sparse.
Traveler's tip on nightlife
Dont miss the very talented piano player at Lefty ODouls (we were there on a Friday night), right off of Union Square, across the street from the Westin St. Francis

A convenient , clean, no frills place to stay in San Francisco
If youre looking for a clean bargain, the Beresford will work well for you. Its good basic lodging with a bit of the feel of San Franciscos bygone days. Its located within a few blocks of Union Square with plenty of places to eat & shop. Addiionaly, if youll be using public transportation its a great starting point for a trip to almost anywhwere on a bus or BART. The staff is friendly and helpful.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
The Beresford is just North of Union Square. This seems to be a bit o a hub for anything you need to get to in SF.

A good choice
Near Union Square shopping, theatres, small restaurants, cable cars, and buses, all within easy walking distance, no a/c, continental breakfast is complimentary, (rolls and cereal, juice and coffee), friendly service, good value for budget travelers
Traveler's tip on dining
If you want a low price dining option, try Lefty ODoguls cafeteria two blocks away, also, see the King Tut exhibit if you can in Golden Gate Park

Nice location
This hotel is very convenient to Union Square, Nob Hill, the cable car lines, and Chinatown, yet its on a quiet side street, so night noise is not a problem. The decor was well-worn, but comfortable. The hotel "restaurant" is really just a bar, so plan to eat out (and there are lots of convenient restaurants nearby). The hotel did include a continental breakfast, but if youre looking for something beyond coffee and rolls, try one of the many diners in the neighborhood instead.

For the price a great deal.
It was a nice, old style hotel at a very reasonable price for being so close to downtown and Union Square. Nothing fancy, just clean, well maintained and a considerate and helpful service staff.
Traveler's tip
If you drove their make sure you get everything out of your car you will need in the city. They valet park your car. I believe it is a bit of a hassle for them to retrieve the car just for you to grab a few extra items you left.

beresford hotel
beresford hotel offered a very good ratio between price, quality and service. The people from the lobby are very helpful and can give you all the advice you need. A computer with a printer and an internet connexion is freely available to all the guests. The rooms are cleaned and comfortable, with a old-fashion english look... What I would finally add is that the hotel has a good situation in the city
Traveler's tip on nightlife
cookies and blues offer good concerts... very close from the hotel...

Great Location! Why pay for useless amenities?
Whey youre in San Francisco, why pay a premium for amenities? Im there to see the city -- not the hotel. The Beresford Hotel is located within blocks of Union Square, Chinatown, the trolley line, the financial district. Old building; lets call it "quaint." Small rooms. But clean and incredibly friendly. Sufficient little continental breakfast included. Great little pub just off the lobby. Its the only place Ill stay!

Positive experience
My husband and I have returned to Beresford Hotel for the second time. Quality is constant, great location, price and service. If you dont like old fashion buildings this may be not for you. If you like older historic buildings this place has an enjoyable atmosphere.

The Beresford is just like its advertisement and totally met my expectations. I really enjoyed my stay there.

You get what you pay for...
For under a Franklin per night, the Beresford isnt bad. Good location and the room was clean. The rooms are small, furniture and bed show wear, and the halls smelled of cigarette smoke. It took a while to get hot water in the shower. The staff was friendly. Did I mention the low price?

Victorian Style Hotel with radiator heat intact
This charming, intimate hotel is still flourishing on Sutter Street. It is only two blocks off Union Square with easy access to public transportation via local buses that stop right across the street for venturing to Pacific Heights, down to the Marina or other great San Francisco neighborhoods just minutes away. The shopping on and near Union Square is divine with the main shopping corridor of Powell Street leading down to Market Street. The stay includes breakfast which is served in the White Horse Tavern downstairs which doubles as a lively bar in the evening. Generous amounts of fruit, cereal, croissants, broiche and coffee or tea are provided in the morning hours. The rooms are comfortably furnished with clean bed, linens and furniture. There is plenty of hot water in the shower. The radiators in this hotel still provide loads of comforting heat against the chill and fog of the city nights. The staff is friendly and accomodating. They remember the returning guests and greet them warmly.

Terrific, excellent price, right in the middle of everything
A great little hotel with an equally great little tavern attached. I stayed in January and was very comfortable, but I didnt see any air conditioning--perhaps they install units for the summer. Ask about that. No WiFi, which didnt bother me too much, as I was there only two days, but still would have been nice. Highly recommended otherwise.

Would Return without Hesitation
This hotel was fantastic. Our room was very clean and the bathroom looked like it has just been renovated. The staff were very friendly and accomodating. The only negative point for me was that breakfast was a bit lacking. We didnt have time to go out for breakfast, but if wed had a bit of extra time, we would have skipped the hotel breakfast altogether.

Great Location, Nice Hotel
Loved our stay at this hotel! Its in a very convenient location close to Union Square, and its a cool old building. The bathroom is tiny, but we did not mind the quaintness. Not good for people who want a luxury hotel or a really quite location, but great for those who want to be near Union Square and like old buildings. Missed the pub downstairs until we went there for the included breakfast (which was decent); would like to check it out in the evening too.

great location!!! affordable!!
The hotel is very central and close to union square as well as the bus line which is why I like to stay there. Close by is a wonderful pastry shop called sugar loaf in case you dont really like their breakfast pastries which I find very dry and too sweet. There is a great fruit selection, I must say. The rooms are very reasonably priced complete with bathroom and hot showers so it is certainly worth the price as how much time does a person really spend in their room in san francisco!!! Also, it is very close to many excellent restaurants.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
Remember to mention that you are a senior (if you are!!!) whenever you ride the bus, BART, go into a museum, etc. The bus system is very cheap, convenient and safe. Lunch, of course, is always a better bet for your big meal of the day than dinner if you are on a budget and the food is the same in many of the great restaurants, i.e. postrio, straits, etc.

good vibes
a clean, well-run hotel, that i would recommend, with the warning that many rooms face brick walls, due to being hemmed in. still, the room was so comfortable it didnt seem that important.

Great Value and Location for the price...
The Hotel Beresford is a great hotel for the budget friendly traveler. The room was clean. The mini bar was stocked with water, juice, wine, beer, soda, etc. The prices were fair and quite cheap. The staff was very helpful. The continiental breakfast served had good pastries, cereal, juice, and coffee. Overall, this was a good hotel to for a one night stay. The location was close to Union Square but not too close, which is good. The closer you get to Union Square, the more people traffic you get.

Good location and clean rooms
Hotel is located in a very good spot of SFO which made it easy to get around. Rooms and breakfast were good. The only downfall was that our room was next to the elevator which made it a little bit noisy...

No A/C!
Be warned this hotel has no A/C! Thank goodness it was a cool night, but we had to keep the window open and there was lots of noise in the alley early in the morning.
