Your journey begins with a convenient mmeting at your accommodation in Chã das Caldeiras. After a short introduction to the volcano, its history, and the unique landscape that surrounds it, the adventure truly begins.
The trail starts at 1,700m, leading across the dramatic lava fields left behind by the most recent eruption. Walking here feels like stepping onto another planet, with black volcanic rock underfoot and the vast caldera stretching around you. As the climb continues towards 2,000m, the path becomes steeper, winding through rugged volcanic rocks and soft ash.
At around 2,300m, a spectacular viewpoint opens up. From here, the entire crater can be seen in all its majesty, and on clear days the silhouettes of neighboring islands appear on the horizon.
