Pocket Guide: Sint Eustatius and Saba

Scuba divers from all over the world routinely flock to the warm, inviting island of Bonaire. The 113-square-mile Caribbean island's name means “Good Air,” and visitors to this special municipality of the Netherlands will surely breathe easy with the variety of attractions offered by this tiny paradise. Along with Aruba and Curacao, Bonaire forms the ABC Islands and is part of the Lesser Antilles chain of islands. Bonaire is particularly renowned for snorkeling, windsurfing, and scuba diving, so discount rates on hotels in Bonaire are most likely to cater to aquatic adventurers. Whether visitors are windsurfing in Lac Bay on the southeastern end of the island or exploring a Dutch shipwreck nestled between two reef systems off the island's southern coast, they can find accommodations and Bonaire hotel deals varying from quaint bungalows and bed and breakfasts to large-scale resorts with grand swimming pools in multiple parts of Bonaire. In addition, larger Bonaire hotels and timeshares contain their own diving shops for picking up last-minute gear or renting equipment at reasonable rates.

Aside from being numbered among the very best scuba diving hotspots in the world, Bonaire boasts a remarkable diversity in flora and fauna. Divers and snorkelers relish the vividly-hued coral, home to seahorses and a bevy of exotic fish species that rings the island's coast, and Bonaire's many flocks of flamingos, a common sight compared to the endangered yellow-shouldered amazon parrot that also calls the island home, can be glimpsed from many hotel rooms and balconies with a trusty pair of binoculars. Travelers can easily assemble their own Bonaire hotel packages tailored to accommodate a range of activities both in and out of the water. Eco-tourism is a burgeoning industry on the island as the largely level terrain lends itself well to biking, horseback riding, and hiking.

Cheap hotel deals in Bonaire may be found in the outskirts of its capital, Kralendijk, as well as in Rincon, the second largest settlement and gateway to Washington Slagbaai National Park, which occupies the northern quarter of the island. To make the most of your cheap Bonaire hotel deal and stretch your dollar, climb to the top of Brandaris for an expansive view of the entire island or hike miles of winding beachside trails. Leave room while making your reservations for activities such as horseback riding at the beach and even into the azure water courtesy of Rancho Wahikemba or the Riding Academy Club in Kralendijk. Alternatively, kayak through the lush wetland mangroves of Lac to see the island from a different perspective and at prices any frugal traveler would relish. Book your trip to Bonaire between the late spring and early fall to enjoy the warmest temperatures and least amount of rainfall.

"Perfect hotel by the beach with great short dives"
What else to ask for, nice comfortable rooms, best beach on the island, beautifull reef close to the hotel that can be reached with a short shore dive (snorkeling or scuba). The Spice beach bar and restaurant serve great food. The wannadive scuba diving center has everything you would need. Also the price is right for both room ,food, diving courses , diving expeditions, or diving gear rentals. We were there for two weeks in mid september 2013 and will be back again soon ;-)

Scout's Place Hotel - Windward Side Hotels
    Rating: 2.5 Stars

    Scout's Place Hotel

    Windwardside, Windward Side - Map
    "Fantastic value!"
You can't beat the location of this budget, dive resort--the heart of Winwardside, the largest community on the island. Walking distance to anything in town plus all the trailheads. Rooms are simple, yet extremely clean and tidy. Four-poster beds with thin mattresses and lace bedspreads; wooden antique nightstands and tables; wicker chairs; tv; phone; standing fan due to no A/C; bathroom w/shower. Rooms don't have scenic, panoramic views, but rather look out over the narrow street and into the restaurant courtyard. Water conservation is prevalent so guests are encouraged to take short showers and keep toilet flushing to a minimum. Restaurant is well-maintained and serves fabulous food, but service is at times slow. The restaurant terrace has the best scenic viewing on all of property. Will definitely stay here again on next trip.
