The ancient Dunluce Castle was once a symbol of power, built at the edge of a basalt cliff overlooking the Irish Sea. During a storm in 1639, part of the castle fell into the sea and the building was abandoned. Today, the ruins on the edge of the cliffs are a dramatic sight. Dunluce Castle is a 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) drive or walk from Bushmills, which is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northwest of Belfast. There is free parking, but you pay to visit the ruins. The castle site is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas and New Year’s Days.
