Island cottage getaway with deck and shared pier on the water.

Riverfront cottage with kitchen and patio
1600 square foot waterfront cottage with panoramic views of the water from inside the cottage, deck, and lawn. No internet, television or telephone. Enjoy. Located in historic Mathews County, Virginia, the waterfront cottage is located on Gwynn’s Island near the mouths of both the Piankatank River and Kibble Creek thus allowing easy access to both shallow, calm creek water and the deeper water of both the river and the Chesapeake Bay. This location also makes it super easy to view sunrises and sunsets on the water. A favorite pastime is to kayak out for sunrises and paddle board out for sunsets. Depending on the time of year, sightings of gulls, herons, dolphins, rays, ospreys, eagles, pelicans, swans, ducks, deer, bunnies, turkeys, and other wildlife are common. Guests may use the pier at the front of the cottage to launch paddle boards or kayaks or to sit on the bench and breathe. Adult guests must constantly supervise guests who cannot swim from falling into the creek and drowning. Guest are responsible for following Virginia rules regarding Coast Guard approved floatation devices and knowing and following appropriate boating laws. https://www.boaterexam.com/usa/virginia/regulations.aspx Swim and wade at your own risk. No lifeguard. Use water shoes as the creek bottom contains sharp oyster shells. Open seating, plastic kayaks are available but you must supply your own life jackets. Do not venture out of the creek if you are not experienced with tides, strong currents and how rapidly weather conditions can change. Keep up with the weather forecast. At certain times of the year, jellyfish are plentiful; avoid getting stung. The cottage sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms. One bedroom has a queen and the other is a small adjoining room, separated by a screened window, with two twins. The fully-equipped kitchen includes oven, microwave, dishwasher, full size refrigerator, drip coffee and K-cup coffee makers, toaster, dishes and cookware. The house has a dining room table on the sun porch. On the sun porch is also a daybed and chairs. Standard bathroom with shower tub combo. The great room has a DVD player and monitor, a variety of movies, books, and games and a pool table. The deck has a table and gas grill and there is a picnic table and small fire pit in the yard. On the road side of the cottage is an attached carport. The laundry room has a washer and dryer. The cottage has central air and heat. We live next door and can promptly assist with any needs. All bed and bath linens are provided. Mathews location: On Cherry Point, Gwynn, VA 23066 (Address/directions provided to guests) Gwynn's Island and Mathews County are rich in history. Locals and guests enjoy excellent fishing, boating, and water sports. Gwynn's Island has museum, restaurant, post office, and a public boat ramp.

Disappointing stay
We arrived to a cottage that smelled heavily of mildew/mold. Enough that our eyes were burning. So forget unpacking your clothes or gear. Airing the place out and a trip to the local store in Mathews supplied us with Microban to knock the smell down so that we could sleep there. By the 3rd day, as long as we sprayed once a day we could manage. Not advertised in the rental description is an old billiard table in the front room. Basically a big room with a pool table and a tv, a couple of chairs and old magazines/books. There is only a davenport on the screen porch for sofa seating. The 3rd day of our stay, a nice lady named Penny walked over to introduce herself. She informed us about the ‘Community Fishing Pier’ that we were allowed to use. The creek is very shallow in front of the cottage, so not good for fishing/crabbing. The creek itself is heavily polluted with fecal algae blooms (suspect old/improper sewage tanks). I also would not encourage children to swim/play in the creek because of the bacteria. It is a shellfish condemnation area & restricted from harvesting because of E.coli. We decided to not even try for crabs in that water. The views were beautiful. Someone really cared about this cottage at some point and it shows in the landscaping. We enjoyed the many birds, surprising geckos under the deck, and the butterflies. Everyone we ran into in the area was polite and helpful. The sea kayaks are very small, we did not try the open kayaks (after our trip up the poop creek, we were a little turned off about hitting the creek again). The bicycles advertised are very, very old and tired. We found ourselves wishing we had a speed boat to get out into the bay. My husband and I love exploring new places and especially love going into coastal areas and foraging for the local seafood. Gwynne and the area surrounding is not that place, unless you can get out into the bay for fishing/crabbing. If the hosts at Gwynn Island Cottage wish to make improvements: -Track down that mold issue (windows? attic?). We noticed overgrown shrubs over windows and old windows needing attention, which can accelerate water issues). Get rid of old, smelly books. -Put together some sort of list for folks with the Wi-Fi name, where the fishing pier is, which house sells steamed crabs, etc. - Considering the cottage’s flaws and lack of amenities, nightly price is absurd--too much to spend for just a beautiful view (pricing edited per Vrbo requirements).

Great Weekend Getaway
We are familiar with the area and enjoyed our stay in this spacious cottage. We were made to feel most welcome and took advantage of the community pier and beach - enjoyed both! WiFi would be a plus.
