Pune featuring a memorial

Learn about the brave soldiers that have played their part in protecting India’s territory since independence. See displays of a fighter jet and battle tanks.

The National War Memorial Southern Command (aka National War Museum) is a homage to the members of the Indian armed forces. It celebrates a devotion to the defense of the nation from the post-independence era onward. Unveiled in 1998, the National War Memorial Southern Command is entirely funded by contributions from citizens. Its exhibits range from decommissioned vehicles to uniforms, photographs and weapons.

Find the memorial’s attractions spread around a complex of well-maintained gardens, courtyards and pathways. At the heart of the complex is a tall war memorial, next to which the national flag of Indian flies proudly. Marble walls etched with names of fallen soldiers surround the memorial and gardens.

A major highlight is an original MiG-23BN fighter aircraft. The jet was used by the Indian Air Force during the Kargil War, a conflict between India and Pakistan in 1999. Look for a model of a frigate that aided in the liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule and served in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971. Various models of battle tanks are also on display.

Indoor galleries, with a soundtrack of patriotic songs, present a deeper insight into Indian military heritage. Read about significant battles, major military leaders and the unification of the nation’s states. Browse the uniforms and flags of military divisions. See examples of guns, grenades, rockets and tank ammunition.

Try your hand at being a soldier by paying to fire a paintball gun at a shooting range. Saturday is a popular day to visit, when soldiers dressed in full regalia perform a military parade. Watch as they walk in perfect synchronization with the musicians of a marching band,

Located in the Ghorpadi neighborhood, the museum is 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) to the west of Central Pune. Parking is limited so it’s advisable to get here by taxi or public buses.

The National War Memorial Southern Command is open daily and admission is free. All exhibits are accompanied by information signs in English.
