Admire the splendid architecture of this fine 17th-century palace, which has been restored and today contains the School of Arts of Asturias.
Designed at the end of the 17th century, the Palacio de Camposagrado (Camposagrado Palace) is a historic structure of Baroque design located in the heart of Avilés.
Consider the long and intriguing history of the palace, which was once a residence for nobles. It was subsequently used as a military barracks in the 19th century, before taking on commercial roles and then, most recently, becoming an art school.
Admire this regal building’s intricate southern façade, replete with elegant windows and balconies. Stand in the spacious Plaza de Camposagrado in front of the building and snap photos of the palace’s rectangular frontage. Gaze up at the two towers flanking the central part of the building. Admire the many pillars that range in style beside the balconies that adorn the façade.
The building is not usually open to the public, but it is sometimes possible to enter it through the central portal and take a look around. Notice the grand staircase. This is among the few surviving parts of the interior following an extensive restoration project in 2002. Chat with some of the local students of the School of Arts of Asturias.
The northern side of the palace faces towards the sea. This façade is every bit as wonderful to look at as the southern one. Study the pillars that form arches in front of a large panel of glass. Cross the road and walk along the meandering pathways of the vast Muelle Park.
The Palacio de Camposagrado can be found right in the center of Avilés. It is on the southern side of the Muelle Park on the western flank of the Ría de Avilés. Ride a bus to a stop at the edge of the park or in the nearby Santiago López Plaza. Make sure to go to nearby highlights, including the San Antonio Church, the Balsera Palace and the City Hall.
