The charming Port Lucaya Marketplace is a bustling hub of more than 80 boutiques, restaurants and bars. The commercial hub of Grand Bahama, the marketplace is set on a 5-acre (2-hectare) peninsula overlooking the waterfront. Shop for items ranging from high-end fashion to local handicrafts and enjoy a meal at one of the excellent restaurants overlooking the water.
A tourist-friendly version of a traditional Bahamian marketplace, Port Lucaya Marketplace exudes more charm than a typical strip mall. Enjoy its brightly painted huts and walkways lined with bougainvillea and hibiscus. In addition to shops selling local art and duty-free crystal, you’ll find plenty of family-friendly activities, such as hair braiding stands and horse-drawn carriage rides.
Shop for international designer labels including Nautica and Gucci or check out some of the local shops where vendors create personalized handicrafts. You’ll find one of the largest straw markets in the Bahamas, where you can purchase batik cloth, tote bags and crafts.
Select from plenty of places where you can take a break for lunch or relax with an ice cream. Even locals are known to head to the market in the evening to enjoy a meal or sip a drink while overlooking the Bell Channel waterway.
Head to the center of the market to the energetic Count Basie Square and bandstand, where some kind of entertainment is almost always taking place. This lively outdoor venue showcases up-and-coming and established artists, with performances ranging from goombay bands to gospel music. Take Bahamian dancing lessons, often offered on weekend nights, while other evenings feature karaoke parties. The square is lined with outdoor bars and clubs, so you can join in the fun or simply watch from the sidelines.
The square is particularly atmospheric during the holidays, with a special tree-lighting ceremony in December. Watch firework displays in the square on holidays such as the Fourth of July and Bahamian Independence Day.
Port Lucaya Marketplace is located on the waterfront, adjacent to the Treasure Bay Casino. Reach the market on foot from most areas of Freeport.
