Rustic lake cottage on beautiful Tyler Lake
We had a wonderful 2 weeks. The house is charming with a perfect backyard, deck and front porch. The landscaping is lovely, full of flowers, and the lake is truly fabulous. We swam every day when it was sunny. The surrounding areas are full of great hikes and beautiful countryside. Bill is a responsive host. The house is a bit quirky as described but not quite as pristine as expected from the pictures and could use some updates. We were prepared for the outdoor shower and non-potable water but it is worth noting that for longer stays buying gallons of water can get a bit tiresome and expensive. Also, there is only one private bedroom and one sleeping loft with 2 single beds and a pull out couch together. The beds are comfortable but fans are very necessary upstairs. Again, we had a great vacation and we hope Bill will make some needed updates since we’d love to come back.

3/5 Okay

Left early
Cute house in a wooded, private lot with comfortable furnishing and beds/linens. Check in was super easy. Lake was beautiful and clean. Neighbors were friendly and helpful. Owner provided floats and a very small boat at the dock (and a kayak that was unclear which one was ours to use). The backyard was spacious with a large deck and a firepit. We unfortunately stayed in July during a heat wave. The 3 fans supplied by the owner did not cool the house down at all. Previous reviews stated that the house cooled down with windows open and the fans, but not during our stay. I suggest bringing your own additional fans if the weather is going to be hot. There were bugs in the bathroom and every morning there were bugs in the sinks. The outdoor shower was fine for water pressure and hot water, but the numerous bottles of shampoo, conditioner and the bar of soap with cracks in it and leaves stuck to it made it seem unclean. There was also no where to put your clothes, just one hook to hang your towel. I would suggest bringing your own towels for the lake. Also, there are no lights outside. "Showering under the stars" as was stated in the ad, is exactly that. I would also suggest bringing shower shoes or flip flops as there is not a path to the shower. The ad also states that the house is "across the street" from the dock. The shared dock is up the road and down an overgrown path that is difficult to get down with water floats and other items. In fairness, it is only about a 2 minute walk to the dock. The toilet does take some getting used to. It worked fine, just not stated in the original ad that they had an "ecotoilet". We ended our vacation early because of the uncomfortable heat at night and honestly the bugs.

Simple almost rustic lake cottage
My wife and I had a pleasant stay here with our two year old. Bill was a wonderful host— responsive and accommodating. The place is comfortable enough and definitely clean. The outdoor shower will take getting used to, for some. We also didn’t see an oven, which should either be clarified with the owner or accounted for by the renter when meal planning. The street was quiet and the yard lovely. Everyone around was friendly. It’s a particularly perfect place if you know other people around the lake.

The property and and sleeping arrangements were ideal.
Loved all about the rental. We unfortunately had raining weather so the outside shower had no place to keep your towel or clothes dry. The shower area could use a light of sorts for the area too.

Quiet cabin on Lake Tyler
The cottage is on a small private dirt road, across the street from Lake Tyler. To access the lake you walk down the road to a shared dock, but it's very close, maybe a minute walk. The water is lovely and it's good for kids as it's shallow enough for wading. We were there during the week so the lake was quiet, not too many boats (but it is an active boating community), and we swam every day. The house is super clean and comes with life jackets and floaties. Beds are comfortable, and the view in the morning from the private room is beautiful. There is a small boat but we didn't use it. Wifi worked great! Bill, the owner, was very responsive and easy to deal with. There are good restaurants in Kent Falls, Torrington, and Litchfield. The electric stove wasn't the easiest for us, so we ate out most of the time, but it's definitely a usable kitchen for those who prefer to cook. Hiking is amazing! So many beautiful trails everywhere, we recommend Kent Falls and White Memorial Trails. Have a great trip!
