About this property

In the Heart of N.e. Iowa's Amish Community

Adults-only cabin in Waterville
Come and be refreshed in the peaceful lifestyle to be found in the center of an Amish community. Experience life as it was in a simpler time. The Granary was built in 1896, among the rolling hills and limestone outcroppings of Northeast Iowa, in an area that has now become a large Amish community. This is horse & buggy country, where it's still a common practice to wave when passing others on the roads and Amish children are seen walking to school with lunch pails. .The Granary has two full size bedrooms and sleeps four. It features a spacious 'Country Kitchen' with dining table and a large living room with a breathtaking view of the valley and the farm's bridge over Paint Creek. There is a trout stream for fishing and several miles of hiking/walking trails that wind through the woods on this 120 acre farm. Two large porches, one with an 'Old Fashion' porch swing, provide a place to simply relax and enjoy the magnificent view of the valley. At the turn of the 1900's, traditional timber frame granaries where built to store grain harvested from the fields. Hand cranked fanning mills where used to clean the grain before storage. Today the Granary's original fanning mill from 1896 is now in one of the bedrooms. Things to do: Google the "Amish Country Granary" website where you will find videos and more detailed information. Simply click on 'Things to do' to learn about the Granary and the surrounding Amish Community . - Go on a buggy ride, take a picnic lunch - Enjoy a sleigh ride with bells in winter - Watch logging with draft horses in spring and fall - Go trout fishing on Paint Creek - Hike on wooded trails that were township roads in the early 1900's - Capture it all with wonderful photo and video memories - Plan a day trip, visititing nearby Amish shops & "English" stores - Complete your day with a campfire at sunset Enjoy your quiet time by curling up with a good book, playing board games, or sitting on the porch swing enjoying the magnificent view of the valley in this picturesque country. The Granary is yours to enjoy. As are the farm's hiking trails & trout stream. All 120 acres are yours to explore, as well as the many local Amish shops. Interaction with guests: My house is a stone's throw away, and myself and the Amish hired man Danny are almost always on the land, available to answer questions or to chat. If you need anything just ask, we will do our best to help. Other things to note Children: This is a working farm and is NOT suitable for children between 2 and 12 years of age. 13 years and older are considered adults. Safety must come first. Towels & linens: A supply of fresh towels are placed in each room. The beds will be made up with fresh linens when you arrive. If you need more just ask. Bathroom & Shower: Hot water shower with a wash basin. Soap and hand towels. Our guests use a chemical toilet that's refreshed every two days or daily when we have 4 guests or more. Kitchen: You will find the country style kitchen is large enough for two or three people to prepare meals together. Electric stove, microwave, refrigerator, stocked with basic kitchen supplies, dish towels, soap, paper towels, salt/ pepper etc. We stock extra ice. Always handy for those warm summer afternoons when guests make 'Home Made - Hand Cranked Ice Cream' on the porch. There is extra coffee and tea along with heavy cream at the house if you run short - no 2% milk. A complete set of cookware, dishes & utensils along with a crock pot and roaster. It's so nice to walk in and have a meal ready when returning from a day trip. A garden is planted next to the farm house with a selection of fresh herbs, tomatoes and basil for you to enjoy. When zucchini comes into season, don't ask just help yourself. Let me know your needs and we will do our best to have things set up when you arrive. The Granary can sleep six but works best for couples or a party of four. The bed rooms, living room seating area, kitchen table and outside deck furniture are designed for two or four guests comfortably with plenty of room. Five or six guests can be a little cozy at times. Walking Sticks, Back Packs & Water Bottles: If you didn't bring walking and hiking equipment, we have provided extra in the granary. There is a wicker picnic basket in the cabinet to your right facing the sink. Internet connections: US Cellular (4g - LTE) is the local service. Connect to the WiFi from the house (works best outside or on the front porch) Firewood: Complimentary fire wood is provided for our guests. BBQ grill: In summer, food just tastes better out of doors. On the back porch is a gas grill next the table and chairs. It's tucked in under the the porch roof where a summer shower won't interrupt your meal. Pets: Sorry, no pets. We like dogs and have two myself, but we can’t be sure your four legged friend will like our horses and animals. ATV's & Motorcycles: Plenty of parking space for trailers and boats. Bring them with you for use elsewhere, just not on the farm's land or roads. Did you forget to pack something? Our house is just a short walk from the Granary. Before going without or driving into town, come and ask if we can be of assistance. You're in the country, feel free to ask. A few restrictions: Please, no parties, overnight guests, large group gatherings or fireworks. We ask that smoking be done outside on the decks. Sorry -No children at this time, do to VRBO charging for your children at an adult rate.
Air-conditioned accommodations at this cabin offer coffee/tea makers. Rooms open to patios. Kitchens offer refrigerators, stovetops, microwaves, and separate dining areas.

    Amish Country Granary

This was an amazing interesting place. John, the owner greeted us and showed us around the property. He took great care in providing us with information about the property and area. I would definitely recommend this property! It was educational I hope to go back!

North east Iowa relaxation at it finest!!

We had a WONDERFUL time during our stay. John is the perfect host. We enjoyed buggy rides with Nellie, fresh Amish rolls and bread ... heavy cream was provided for our fresh roasted coffee. EVERY detail was attended to. We would highly recommend these accommodations to anyone looking to find a few days of relaxation and peace in the beautiful countryside, and even get in a little fishing. We will definitely be back! Thanks again John it was a real treat!!!

        Heavenly solitude

The Granary was probably one of the best VRBOs I have ever stayed at. It was beautiful, it was peaceful, it was picturesque. You couldn’t ask for a better host than John, the property owner. Thank you John, for the satisfaction of the entire stay.

          A Peaceful Retreat

We loved it! My daughter and I wanted a little peace and quiet before the start of college exams for her, chaos of holiday season for me. Goal achieved! This home of John's is perfect for up to 4 adults who want to unplug for a while. Our internet and phones worked well, but there is no TV, and we didn't miss it. The only sound in the morning is of cooing doves. Laying in bed, it is SILENT. The place is immaculate. Beds comfortable. Linens, paper, kleenex in abundance. An extra: John provides freshly roasted coffee beans and a hand-turned grinder, heavy cream, eggs, and fresh baked 7-Grain bread from the Amish Bakery 1/2 mile away. What luxury! We were invited to take a horse and buggy ride with horse Tony, and a 2 person cart ride with draft horse, Nellie. If we had been there a week later, he would have had their sleigh bells on the harnesses. The truest gem of this place is the host himself. John is so knowledgeable about the area and very warm and inviting. We loved every minute we spent with him. He is not intrusive--don't get the wrong idea--if you wanted to be left alone, he wouldn't be hovering. My only regret, besides missing the sleigh bells on a one-horse sleigh? It was too cold the weekend we were there to enjoy the front and rear decks and having a bonfire under the stars. I've already decided to come back next Spring/early Summer with my husband for another time to unplug. And I may come out alone too, with some good books, to read on that porch, while I sip my freshly roasted and ground coffee with heavy cream, and listen to the doves as the sun rises.

            Special Place

We spent the weekend at the Granary and can't wait to return! It's a truly special place, one that will instantly take you back in time to the days when the world was moving at a much slower pace. The granary is warm and welcoming, and we loved the cozy interior with all its attention to detail. John, the owner, is such a kind and thoughtful host! He made sure we had everything we needed (including butter, cream, and continued heat from the oven) and was available to us throughout our entire stay. His buggy rides and a visit to the nearby Amish bakery are an absolute must! We so enjoyed connecting with John, and felt well taken care of throughout the entire time. This is a perfect get-away if you want to slow down, re-charge and connect with nature. You may find it hard to leave - we certainly did!
