Predjama Castle is a fascinating Renaissance relic embedded in the mouth of a cave. Dating back to the 13th century, the castle seems like something out of a dark fairy tale with its fortress-like façade, hidden passageway and historic legend. Learn the history of the structure as you traverse its eerie interior.

The castle looks out from its perch halfway up a 400-foot (123-meter) cliff. Peruse the interior of the building and see its stately rooms, which offer an insight into how noble families lived here. Kids will love the treasure chest and the holes in the ceiling designed for pouring boiling oil on invaders. Check out the chapel, the dungeon and the living quarters. See collections of weapons and works of art. The most notable is the 15th-century sculpture of the Virgin Mary.

Hear the legend of Erazem Lueger, a renowned rebel knight who was lord of the castle in the 1400s. The knight was wanted for murdering the commander of the imperial army and hid in the castle for a year and a day. The legend has it that the army finally captured him while he was in the bathroom, after a tip off from a disloyal servant.

This is a modern well-kept clean apartment with good facilities. The kitchen is modern with a dish-washer. There were a lot of nice small touches. The owner was friendly and provided lots of useful information. My family was very comfortable staying here and we would return

We stayed for five nights. Our arrival was miserable. We drove from Split. Our intention was to arrive by 8pm, but due to some delays, we arrived at 9:30pm. The reception had left at 9pm. The front door was locked. There was a note: call a local number to gain entry. Being from Canada, we tried to avoid costly cellular roaming fees and were travelling with data only (eSIM). So we couldn’t call the number. After trying to contact the property via Expedia (which failed), we finally enabled roaming (expensive), and were able to speak to the property and they talked us into locating keys in a lock box. The room we got was room 7…one of three attic rooms. We had to lug our suitcases way up to an attic level…the stairs were not lighted…and we finally, using the phone’s flashlight, were able to enter the room. This room was built between roof trusses and beams. To get into the beds required climbing over wooden beams while avoiding hitting one’s head on a slanted wall/ceiling. Accessing one bed required climbing under a steel rod while climbing over a wooden beam. Quite dangerous and not acceptable in terms of safety. We stayed in this room for the first night but insisted that we receive a better room. We moved into room 2, not an attic room, for the last four nights. Note…the photos of the attic room skillfully manage to conceal the hazards. The lower level room was much better. It was nice, but there weren’t enough places to stash belongings/towels, but it was clean & tidy
