Leiria is a very contemporary city that also has a strong sense of the past. Window-shop in its varied retail districts, wander the picturesque streets of the old quarter and climb the city’s central hill to discover the magic of its dramatic castle.
Leiria is built along the banks of the River Lis, which is a wonderful place to walk or bike. Wander the galleries of the Museum of Leiria, next to the river, to see the story of the city presented through engaging exhibits. Those with an interest in history should also make sure they visit the Church of São Pedro, which dates as far back as the 12th century. And see even older artefacts inside the impressive, bright white Leiria Cathedral, which is home to an archaeological museum.
Admire the stylish and colorful old-fashioned buildings around Rodrigues Lobo Square, the hub of the city. Explore the nearby streets to find both upscale and affordable stores housed in gorgeous historic buildings. Shop for the intricate crystal that the Leiria region is known for here, or even go on a daytrip to the nearby city of Marinha Grande, where it is manufactured.
No visit to Leiria is complete without a visit to the imposing Leiria Castle. Climb the hill at the heart of the city and enjoy impressive views across the pretty red-roofed buildings below as you go. Appreciate the scale of the rambling castle as you draw near the summit. When you get up close, look for architectural elements from different periods. Although much of the castle was built in the 14th century, it has been damaged and rebuilt several times and some of its parts are even older.
Those with access to a car will find that Leiria is the perfect place for a daytrip from Lisbon. Drive there in around 1.5 hours. Or, take public transportation and spend a night. Come in the summer to see the unique spectacle of the castle’s grounds filled with black-clad festival-goers during the annual gothic music festival, Entremuralhas.
