Old Pinnacles Trail is a moderate-level trail that showcases the stark beauty of central California’s Pinnacles National Park. Lace up your favorite walking shoes and discover boulder-clad gorges, caves and rock formations. Marvel as magnificent volcanic rock faces soar up toward big blue skies. Visit a talus cave on the trail and watch impressive sunsets.
The 5.3 mile (8.5 kilometer) round-trip trail starts at the Old Pinnaces Trailhead, in the center of the park. Plan between three and five hours for the out and back journey. This flat hiking route begins by meandering around a sandy canyon framed by dense woodland and thick chaparral shrubland plants. It follows the course of West Fork Chalone Creek, a stream that is dry throughout most of the year.
Towering cliffs and rock walls come into view after about two miles. Gaze up at these fascinating geological formations, which were formed millions of years ago by tectonic shifts. At this point the trail links up with the Balconies Cave Trail. Look for the climbers making their way up 1,979-feet (603-meter) tall Machete Ridge.
Continue walking until you reach the eery Balconies Cave. This talus cave is the result of boulders falling from the surrounding cliffs and filling up narrow canyons and gorges. Bring a flashlight to guide yourself through the cave’s dark and damp chambers, which sit below the piles of massive boulders. Zigzagging passages take you on a wonderful journey from one side of the cave to the other.
Superb photo opportunities abound at the turn of every bend on the trail. Hike in the afternoon and stay to watch as the setting sun casts a beguiling light on the Balconies Cliffs.
The Old Pinnacles Trail is accessible year round and an admission fee is applicable to enter the national park. Parking is available at the trailhead. Heavy rainfall can cause the temporary closure of the cave. Ask about the current situation at the Pinnacles Visitor Center.
