8.8/10 Excellent! (2,804 reviews)
We picked this hotel purely for two reasons—lower cost and its downtown location. Most of the surrounding hotels of seemingly comparable quality were more expensive. Plus we wanted a downtown location to simplify a short two and a half day exploration of Vancouver. Based on those criteria we achieved our goal, but there were some limitations that felt obvious as we walked off the elevator into the open air inner courtyard reminiscent of the apartments from The Karate Kid movie.
While the green space (see picture) of the courtyard was pleasant enough, the first look at the exterior made it clear the hotel is in dire need of a refresh—paint, floor finishes, exterior cleaning, etc… It “feels” tired.
Our room (I suppose all rooms are similar) had a loud portable HVAC unit which made the room feel cramped. Admittedly I realized that a downtown hotel will have street noise, but there were moments that the music from adjacent businesses was quite loud. Lastly, we were concerned with some of the folks who appeared to be living on the street very near the hotel. While we didn’t have any issues, we also did not venture out after dark, so we recommend caution.
On the positive side, the staff was very pleasant and helpful. They stored our bags before check-in and after check-out, so we could explore unencumbered. The hotel was conveniently located to take advantage of public transportation.
