Doobie Brothers Ticket Information

The Doobie Brothers have gone through new members and sounds, but vocal harmonies have always been a defining factor of the group. Formed in 1970, the band has since sold more than 40 million albums around the world. The era of most success came when Michael McDonald joined the Doobie Brothers, altering their sound to soul music.

Soul of the 70's

In 1970, John Hartman and Tom Johnston teamed up with Patrick Simmons and Dave Shogren to form the first incarnation of the Doobie Brothers. They attracted a strong following playing gigs all over Northern California, and they eventually signed a contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1971. They released their self-titled debut album the same year, featuring the lead off single “Nobody”, which has surfaced in their shows over their entire career. Jeff Baxter of Steely Dan joined the group in 1974, and Johnston was replaced by Michael McDonald due to his health. With these changes came a significant change in the band’s sound. Their original classic rock style gave way to a more soulful, soft rock with complex harmony and developed melodies. McDonald’s foggy voice quickly became the Doobie Brothers’ signature sound. Johnston made several appearances in 1976, but eventually left for a solo career in 1979. The band’s eighth album, Minute by Minute, topped the charts for five weeks straight. McDonald’s composition, “What a Fool Believes” earned the band a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. The Doobie brothers toured extensively in 1979, playing at Madison Square Garden and Battery Park in New York City with artists like James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and more. The group disbanded in 1980, but successfully reunited in 1987. They went on to release more successful records like Cycles and Brotherhood. The band has continued to tour since 1993.

The Doobie Brothers Tickets 2020

Though the Doobie Brothers faced obstacles that would surely disband a group for good, it is no surprise that they remain successful to this day. They toured with Santana earlier in 2019, and have announced a massive string of dates for the following year, with Michael McDonald back on stage.
