Founded in 1948 by legendary choreographer George Balanchine, the New York City Ballet is America’s premier company for performances of both classic ballets and original new works. NYCB first began as a resident of the New York City Center, and later moved to Lincoln Center following their remarkable success. The move marked the beginning of Balanchine’s most creative period as he went on choreograph work that would later earn him the title of The Father of American Ballet. Until his death in 1983, he mentored some of the most recognized names in US ballet history, including Edward Villella, Maria Tallchief, and Mikhail Baryshnikov.
