The team started out as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974, eventually moving to Denver for 6 years before becoming the New Jersey Devils in 1982. The 1994–95 season was shortened by a lockout, but the Devils made it into the Stanley Cup Finals and defeated the Detroit Red Wings thanks to the outstanding performance of Claude Lemieux, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner. Their championship success was repeated in the year 2000, and they won the cup again in 2003 in a thrilling 7-game set against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (now the Anaheim Ducks). Though they haven’t won another cup, the Devils regularly contend in the postseason, including 5 straight division championships between 2005 and 2010. Since then, the team has appeared in another Stanley Cup championship but has struggled both on and off the ice for the past few years.
