The ice is heating up at Newark’s Prudential Center as the New Jersey Devils fight for a spot in the NHL Playoffs for the first time since losing to the LA Kings in the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals. Despite the recent postseason drought, the Devils have a history of success that includes 3 Stanley Cups, 5 conference championships, and 9 division titles. This year’s team features top-scoring left wing Taylor Hall and assist-ready center Nico Hischier, and they are ready to take on all challengers in the Metropolitan Division. Whether you are trying to find tickets for a rivalry game against the New York Rangers or Philadelphia Flyers or are looking to follow the team through the playoffs, pick up an affordable Devils ticket before they’re all gone.
The team started out as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974, eventually moving to Denver for 6 years before becoming the New Jersey Devils in 1982. Pre-Jersey, the team had a mix of success and financial struggles, but everything finally came together when they moved to East Rutherford. With the addition of core players John MacLean, Bruce Driver, Ken Daneyko, Kirk Muller, and Pat Verbeek, the team saw steady improvement throughout the 1980s. In 1988, the team was on the precipice of success when John MacLean scored the tying and winning goals to clinch a spot in the playoffs. Though they didn’t win the cup, the franchise was on the road to a championship. The 1994–95 season was shortened by a lockout, but the Devils made it into the Stanley Cup Finals and defeated the Detroit Red Wings thanks to the outstanding performance of Claude Lemieux, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner. Their championship success was repeated in the year 2000, and they won the cup again in 2003 in a thrilling 7-game set against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (now the Anaheim Ducks). Though they haven’t won another cup, the Devils regularly contend in the postseason, including 5 straight division championships between 2005 and 2010. Since then, the team has appeared in another Stanley Cup championship but has struggled both on and off the ice for the past few years. But the current team doesn’t care about what happened in the past. They are playing to get into the playoffs this year.
The National Hockey League's New Jersey Devils will open their 40th season on Thursday, October 13, on the road when they play the Philadelphia Flyers. The Devils open their home schedule against the Detroit Red Wings two nights later, with a Saturday night matchup at Prudential Center. The 2022–23 New Jersey Devils season will be the 49th season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on June 11, 1974, and 41st season since the franchise relocated from Colorado prior to the 1982–83 NHL season.
