Pick up one of the hottest tickets in NYC, head over to Madison Square Garden, and get ready to cheer for the hard-hitting and fast-skating New York Rangers hockey team. The squad is one of the most decorated in NHL history, with 4 Cups, 8 Division Championships, and 2 Conference Championships. As part of the so-called “Original Six” NHL teams, the New York Rangers have a rich and interesting past—and an even more exciting future.
The Rangers were known for a year as The Americans, but the name quickly morphed into “Tex’s Rangers,” in honor of the team’s founder George Lewis "Tex" Rickard. Tex loved the name so much that, even before the first season started, he ditched his original logo in favor of the well known diagonal letters: R-A-N-G-E-R-S. The team brought the United States its second Stanley Cup in 1928 thanks to a wild game in which the coach actually tended goal for 2 periods. The Broadway Blueshirts were the talk of New York City during the Roaring Twenties, and they brought home another 2 Stanley Cups in the 1930s. With so much love from local fans, hockey has always been one of the best things to do in New York City. After quite a few years of struggles, the team pulled it together in 1993 to win another championship. Superstars Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky even played together for a season, which led to no shortage of excitement.
New York will begin its 96th season of play against the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 11 at Madison Square Garden, as the season kicks off with a 2022 Eastern Conference Final rematch. The Rangers will play five of their first seven games this season, as well as nine of their first 14 contests, at home. New York will play 10 games in October, 14 in November, 13 in December, 12 in January, 11 in February, 16 in March, and six in April. The Blueshirts close out the season with a home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on April 13. During the off-season, the Rangers named Jacob Trouba the 28th captain in franchise history. The 2022–23 New York Rangers season will be the franchise's 96th season of play and their 97th season overall.
